Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife staff in the Royal Natal National Park in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site report that Mr Luan Carter (19) of Harrismith fell to his death from the head of the Thukela Falls in the early hours of today - 23 July 2008. Mr Carter was hiking with a group of friends and had spent the night on top of the Amphitheatre. While the group was packing up he and a friend walked to the head of the Thukela Falls to admire the view. Conditions are very icy at the moment and it appears that Mr Carter must have slipped and fallen some 80 metres to his death.Another group of hikers witnessed the accident and one of their members, an SAPS member, immediately contacted the SAPS Search and Rescue Unit. The EKZNW staff at Royal Natal were also informed and they instituted the standing rescue procedure which brought in the provincial Emergency Medical Rescue Service. Mr Carter's body was retrieved by the SAPS Search and Rescue Unit and taken to a local mortuary. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr Carter.
