As per Brio's request, the way to tie shoelaces on shoes that go further up your ankles than cheaper boots is as follows (ie ones with 3 open loops to put the laces through):
- Loop the first loops and tie a single knot here
- Loop the laces through the top loop and then down through the middle loop
- Move your foot forward to make sure the tongue isn't too immobile
- Tie the laces normally on this middle part

It looks like this:

Thanks.
So tying them the ordinary way was putting too much tention on the tendons?

It must have been. Whatever was happening, my achilles tendon was getting worse and worse, and once I changed the way I tied my shoelaces, the problem quickly went away. Apparently the tongue being too tight stops the ankle from maneuvering properly, and this was somehow was making my tendons very sore.

This works for me.
I tighten the laces on the part that a normal shoe has but instead of tying the lace in the same place like on a normal shoe, I twist the laces together three times instead of once. Do the same on the next loop. For me that keeps the tention on the foot part of the boot. Then I do the upper part a little looser, some times ever not using the top loop as it is too restrictive.

Will give the technique you used a try.
