TOPIC: Namahadi Peak

Namahadi Peak 31 Aug 2011 07:43 #3869

Hi

Want to go climbing namahadi peak, but I saw on the map that I have (the No 1 of the drakensberg map series) it seems that I am just missing namahadi peak on the map. So am I going to have to go the government survey maps route on this one, or can someone help me out with a scanned map or something?

I saw you can get some of the government maps here government maps but it seems like they haven't done the entire country. So how does one go about getting some of these maps?

Also regarding namahadi, I presume the easiest way to get to it is to simply go up chain ladders and then follow the escarpment to the peak? Can anyone who has done it tell me how long it should take?

Thanks
Rinus

Hi Rinus, Hope this pdf scan I have of the relevant area from Slingsby's map helps you. Namahadi is the peak at the top of the Namahadi Pass, Lekhalo-la-Namahali, 3197m on the map. It is about 2 km south west of the chain ladders and about 200 m higher in altitude.

Sorry, made the pdf a bit smaller, hope it goes through now. I hope this is the correct peak you are after, and not another peak to the west off the map.

Hi Tony

Seems like that is not the one I am looking for. The peak Lekhalo-la-Namahali is only 3197m and namahadi peak is 3275m, and apparently it is not on the map tha you sent me (I also have that same map).

So can anyone provide me with a map of where to find Namahadi peak (highet peak in Free State).

Namahadi Peak is on the Mont-Aux-Sources 2828DD mapsheet and isn't even marked, nor does it have a spot height, believe it or not. It is much further west than the Lekhalo-la-Namahadi and Namahadi Pass. Very manageable and pleasant hike in a day, from the Chain Ladders, so its the perfect weekend hike, with a nice valley for camping near it. Nearby is a mini-Rhino Peak, jutting out from the escarpment, with rewarding views. The TIFF images are too large for email, I'll have to upload it on the site temporarily so you can download it.
