Does anyone know where one might find from where the name of a peak originates? Is there any place where one can see why a peak was given a certain name, and what that name means (in different language).

I am specifically looking for KwaDuma, what it means and why it was given that name.

Any help or hints would appreciated!

Reg Pearse did lots of research for the book Barrier of Spears, and this kind of info can be found in there. Some of the other older Berg books will also be useful for that, as well as all of the MCSA journals over the years. However, you will find very little about peaks outside of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park.

I stand under correction here, but I don't think KwaDuma has been officially named. The name comes from the nearby river that the peak is associated with. It is common practice to refer to unnamed peaks, passes and caves after other nearby named features (such as rivers). Sometimes these names are temporary place holders until a better name is established or discovered, and other times the name sticks. I have used this practice for the list of Khulus above 3300m, since many of these don't have official names yet. For most of the unnamed ones I have assigned the name of a nearby river. These names are temporary until more suitable names are established.

And you'd better hurry before Popple names them all!

lwould guess that KwaDuma means place of Thunder. A similar version in locative form is Indumeni. Kwa desginates 'place of' and 'duma' is thunder.
