It`s an interesting little cave we stumbled across on the slopes of Pampiring in April 2007. I included it in the GPS data downloads as a potentially useful cave for other keen cave hunters like myself. There were no signs that it had been used before, though I would guess that a handful of other hikers have come across it before. If an accepted name for it is already in use, please let me know. The name Reido comes from the nickname of Paul Reid who was a part of that hike. Its simply a fun, easy name that stuck. Paul likes to think that he `discovered` the cave and we grew tired of trying to convince him otherwise.

The main sleeping area at the front of the cave shown in this picture could sleep 3-4 people, though a strong, frontal wind could blow rain and snow in. A dome tent could be pitched half under this area for really snug protection. What makes the cave particularly interesting is the narrow tunnel, several meters deep, branching off from the main sleeping area - see this picture. Its a Rat Hole Cave all over again! I wriggled down it to the end - it would offer excellent protection for one extra person. A second person could theoretically sleep right at the end of the tunnel, though this won`t easily happen - best kept for stashing gear!

It overlooks one those classic bowl-shaped valleys typical of the area, where water can be collected (a good reason not to go to the toilet anywhere near the cave, or on those slopes). A call to everyone intending to visit the cave: please do so discreetly and with much care and consideration for the environment and other hikers.

Reido is a great find - nicely located along the way from well known caves - in fact just the sort of place that is perfect to slip into towards the end of the day without anyone knowing.

Over the years I've walked in several mountains and mountain ranges including the Berg, western Cape, Namibia, Mnt Kenya, southern Algeria, SW Libya, Alps, Wind Rivers, Pyrenees, NZ southern Alps. But its only the Berg in this list that has such a prolific supply of caves. It really is quite remarkable, especially when one thinks that completely different geology, with completely different history (aeolian sedimentary Vs igneous extrusive volcanism), at very different altitudes with the caves formed by very different processes has led to their existence. Makes the Berg, along with its perfect mix of weather and seasonality and sweet, clear water to drink a great, great place to spend time. All the more reason to push a 4x4 over the escarpment edge if I ever see one near enough!

@mnt_tiska: I share your sentiments about what makes the Berg special compared to other mountain rages, something I've been intending to highlight sometime in a blog post. Caves and fresh water being one of the many things.

@diverian: enjoy!
