TOPIC: Long Weekend

Long Weekend 16 Mar 2010 17:39 #984

So is anybody else hitting the Berg this weekend? We're doing the Mnweni-Rockeries thing and it's actually been about 2 years since I had a good old overnight hike in the berg...

Can't wait!

So how about a straw poll: Which cave do you prefer - Ledger's or Mponjwane? For me it's Ledger's. I have stayed in Mponj once before and the view is certainly better but there's something about scrambling down that gully and being perched right on the edge of the escarpment that keeps me going back to Ledger's, especially if there are berg-newbies in the group!

Discuss..

Stijn's provocation has the makings of a Toyota-Land Rover debate! OK, here goes. I added up the number of nights I've spent in Mponj cave over the years and its now more than a month's worth. Ledgers - yet to stay for longer than tea. Actually, we came close once afer figthing our way over in bad weather from Icidi, but it almost felt disloyal to stay on, and without any discussion we were soon labouring up the slope to Mponj not helped by the kilos of water on board. So where's the objectivity in this lot, a better sunrise maybe?

I'm doing the Mnweni / Rockeries loop over easter. Will be my first time in Mnweni area. Not too sure which cave to go for.......
Do the locals use both of them?

As far as I know, neither gets used by locals. I've actually never seen Basotho lurking anywhere near either cave, even though both passes are quite popular.

@mnt_tiska: I'll give you the better sunrise. In fact, the best sunrise I have ever seen is from that little outcrop above Mponj Cave. Sea of clouds at about 2000m stretching to the horizon, with the cathedral range, mponj and the eastern butress rising out of the clouds like islands. We all just sat there in silence for about an hour, completely gobsmacked by the scene...

Call me lazy but I'm doing Bushman's cave and Ngwangwane Pass

Re:Long Weekend 18 Mar 2010 00:20 #994

I was meant to be doing pholela and gxalingenwa as part of a springbok scout hike, but the guys rugby coach refused to let him off for one game, saying if he chose scouts over rugby, he would never play for the first team again.

What a prick.
