TOPIC: Fire season 2010

Fire season 2010 23 Aug 2010 11:34 #1642

So its blowing and glowing again in the Berg (fire and wind season). Just a reminder to all fellow Berg-junkies to be on your guard against fires. Yesterdays satellite pic below shows pretty thick smoke, particularly in the Southern Berg and further down.

Our view from Lynx cave on Friday evening 20/08/10 was of 3 fires burning, one in NE, one E and a large fire SE.
The SE fire had started inthe morning, and was visible our entire trip up the ridge to Mhlalangubo P, with the column of smoke becoming a huge cumulus as the day progressed.
The Easterly fire was still burning through the area outside the boundry of Vergelegen when we left on Sunday at 16h30.
It was cold burning into the wind right down to the rivers. Sunday morning on the summit was brown with smoke.
Interestingly there was little evidence of fire on the summit, just small patches near settlements around Lamunram valley.

Hi all
I carry a little plastic bottle filled with benzene with a lighter strapped to it. It's about 80ml worth. It's in an accesable pouch for quick access if I need to back burn an area quickly. I have witnessed first hand how quickly these berg fires move especially up hill. Hope I dont have to try my system

Caught this massive fire in the Giants Castle area on Aug 31st. It was still visible in yesterday's images too:

This was a fire break burning in action at the base of Redi Pass, taken from Giants Castle in July...wonder if that was of any help in the current blaze in that area.

Also caught this fire below the Horns at Cathedral Peak at the beginning of the month:
