Hi

I was wondering where is the best place to buy gear in Johannesburg.

Cape Union Mart is very weak, Drifters and Ventures for Africa are very expensive and it seems the best stores are in Cape Town.

Any suggestions? particularly for hiking boots.

In general we in SA are deprived of proper gear merchandisers. I'm not well acquainted with the stores in Gauteng, but as far as I know Drifters stocks the best gear.

I know it's not in Joburg, but have a look at Mountain Mail Order http:/www.mountainmailorder.co.za/. Their prices are decent and they sell proper gear. Boots will be a problem since you can't fit them on...

Drifters do stock good gear and are very good at fitting boots properly. You can also go to Hikers Paradise in Centurion- they are also expensive but stock specialist gear. Ask for a guy named Sarel there, who is good with boots. You can also check out the Capestorm shop in Bryanston - they have some good gear and you might be able to find someone with expertise.

Other than that there are plenty of Due South and Outdoor Warehouse stores, but don't depend on them for good advice.
