Hello Everybody,

My situation. I live in Cape Town. Need to attend a course at Peakhigh next week, starting the Monday at Hilton somewhere. Have a lift to and from the airport only on Sunday & Friday.

What is the public transport like. Avis is out of my league. The course finish at the Bushman's Neck area. Would be nice if one could use one of the two ajoining weekends at least to get into the berg, even if it is only a solo trip, but I know nothing about busses and transport.

Anybody with any knowledge of affordable shuttles etc?

Bushmans neck is just over 2 hours away from the airport. There are no buses or cab services that do that.
Hilton is about 50 minutes away from the airport.
Your best bet is a rental car.

Unless someone else from the community here is in the Berg that weekend, hire car would be best bet... sorry. I will be at home in Pmb, which would be best bet to get shuttle to airport from.

Maybe you could use Baz Bus www.bazbus.com, which is aimed at the backpacker market. There are several backpacker spots in Underberg and I think that bus may link Underberg with Maritzburg and Durban. From Underberg you could either take local transport if you dare, hitch hike, or stay at a backpackers and ask them to help you.

Possibly check out the 2 main Berg hiking clubs based in Durbs/PMB - see if you cant sync your arrival/departure times to hook up a lift with one of the hike groups going up/coming back from the berg on one of the weekends.

looking at weekend of 16/17 i see the PMB based club will be in Bushman's Nek area according to their hike list, and I know the club I belong to Mountain Backpackers is going up same weekend to Garden Castle area.

Haha, Underberg has no public transport

But there are alot of friendly people there, you could probably find a farmer to take you to bushmans nek, its not too far from Underberg. I know there is an elderly mountain walking group in Underberg, they could probably oblige. But I have no idea how to contact them. There is an info booth in the town, maybe they have a phone number.
