TOPIC: Mashai Pass security concerns

Mashai Pass security concerns 08 Apr 2010 10:12 #1091

It seems the shepherds around Mashai Pass and The Rhino are becoming increasingly problematic. The following snippet from the KZN MCSA updates:
Tod Collins from Underberg reports the following:

SOUTHERN BERG - WARNING TO HIKERS

Hikers visiting the escarpment to climb The Rhino, or traversing the berg
past the Mashai Pass, please be warned that a gang of local herdsmen have
become very demanding and aggressive.

Until the situation can be sorted out via the chiefs and/or local police
(not that they are exactly "local") it's a good idea to avoid the area or be
prepared with the usual cigarettes and cans of Mace for self-defence.

Further discussion on this topic has been continued on the Berg Alert 2010 thread. See December update there. Thanks to Tod Collins for continued efforts in addressing the situation.

I understand the MACE bit. Whats the deal with the cigarettes though?

Do you MACE them and then burn a message into their foreheads with the ciggs then?

Seriously though - MACE will do, the ciggs are just going to aggravate the problem - the problem being that handouts in Africa lead to the DEMAND for more handouts!

NO and/or MACE will do just fine.

I suspect that is just meant lightheartedly. Maybe if he reads this he will explain
