TOPIC: Suggestions for site upgrade 2009

Suggestions for site upgrade 2009 10 Feb 2009 14:40 #291

As mentioned in the recent news update, this site is heading towards its second major overhaul in the coming weeks. There will be a new look-and-feel, some improvements, and new features such as a member blog and personal gallery space. The aim is to expand the site to better support an online community and to share information.

As members your suggestions and ideas are of great value. Please use this thread to voice what you would like to see on this site, areas where we could improve etc. Don't be shy, but be nice .

Thanks for the input Magan. Was thinking of creating a Passes album in the new site to collect pics of passes. Can certainly look at doing the same for the different areas of the Berg.

I'm looking at different gallery options for members. Opening this up for everyone to contribute photos will certainly see more of the desired pics. Forums are fine for sharing the odd pic, but a fully fledged gallery goes much further. There are likely to be fixed categories that one can upload to, but also trying to keep this flexible so that one can create a new category / sub-album.

Stupid Q. Would it be possable to load the berg maps onto the site, or are there copy right restrictions on that?

A dedicated gear review especialy on South African made mountaineering/ hiking equipment. International sites have some very good gear review forums but I'm yet to find one in SA. Don't know if that is something that you would like to drive on this site?

Have glance at this site, it does not have to be this dedicated.

No such thing as stupid questions...that's what forums are for

Loading maps onto the site would violate copyrights, but it is not impossible to get permission (especially if something is offered in return, like error reporting). How would that be useful to you though - is it that you'd want to check out areas where you don't have your own copy?

Gear reviews has come up before, so I guess there is something to be considered. The best is to have it member-driven (like it is on the link you posted), i.e. that members can post an item for review, rather than just being able to comment on an item which the site admin has decided to post.

The question for me is: does a regular forum like this provide a sufficient framework to do these reviews, or is a dedicated component better, one where you can upload a picture, do a basic report, give a rating, and others can comment or post their own rating on the same item?
