TOPIC: Boot odour joys

Boot odour joys 29 Jun 2010 05:56 #1420

So, some of my boots have built up a bit of a rank smell. The ones I have on right now have just come through 3 days of plowing through wet snow and smell even worse now! And I'm about to board a plane, where I like to remove my boots...poor fellow passengers! I have take some plastic bags with to seal them off at least.

Wanted to hear from the rest of you, if you know of any good tricks to get rid of boot odours (short of just about ruining them with vigorous washing). I have used baby powder and tea tree oil (to kill bacteria). Works OK but could be better.

Keep the Berg clean, keep the Berg free!

I find the best thing to do is to clean them as normal and just leave them in the sun to dry out for a few days.

Sheesh Gents

Have never noticed that SPECIFIC odour.
[I sleep with them next to my head. Maybe thats why I sleep so good.]
After 2 days out pretty much everythang has an odour, including evrythang that belongs to your mates.
The only odour issue that really causes a prob is the one where an INDIVIDUAL in the party decides to carrry and use DEO.
[tending to be the same individuals who have a never ending supply of clean press t-shirts, jocks etc]
That tends to stuff the ODOUR BALANCE up !

Hiking in mid winter of course tends to lessen the odour of everything, including possibly the fact that everyone keeps most of their kit on.
After day 4 / 5 as you stroll into the lower camps / hotels, amidst the 'tissue flingers' and conference goers you have no trouble moving the crowd.
Then to SHOWER BLISS [unless of course you end at Vergelegen !] and binbag everything.

It certainly wouldn't be the same without ODOURS.

Thats my 6 cents worth.

LOL @ SeriousTribe2!

happy memories of walking into Nandos Harrismith on a packed Thursday night after a 5 day winter summit traverse (definitely no bathing) with all our foul dirty kit still on. The looks were priceless...

Intrepid I have heard that vinegar or even a bit of vanilla essence can get rid of odours. Get a small plastic cup or container lid, pour the vinegar in and leave it in your boot so the fumes can take care of the vapours. I've not tried it on shoes though, but it works in cupboards. If your boots have gone gorgonzola you'll prob have to repeat a couple of times.

Put those smelly boots in the sun intrepid, and then in a plastic bag (tied-up) while your on the plane. Especially if you are sitting next to me!
