TOPIC: "Long weekend" hiking

"Long weekend" hiking 14 Jun 2011 08:58 #3134

Hi all, I'm leaving for Mweni from the 16th to 19 June. Anyone doing some hiking in the berg at that time?

Not too sure about the route, but as far as planned: Up Fangs, Down Rwanqa, up Mweni & down Rockeries. Anyone welcome to join!

Happy hiking

Hey Jaques

That sounds like an "extra pass" too many. Planning something a bit more sedate in the Giants Castle Area, up Bannermans and down Giants Pass, with a detour to Giants Castle Peak.

Won't be in the Berg this time round. Enjoy it everyone.

@diverian: if you are planning on camping at Makhaza, or anywhere on the massif, bear in mind that smugglers use Elandshoek Pass even in the winter, so don't leave gear unattended even though it appears no-one is around. Encountered them there last winter. We were having a look at the ice fall at Makhaza and my friend kept smelling dagga..seemed odd cause it was mid-winter and no-one was around. We walked towards Elandshoek Pass and suddenly saw a bunch of them sitting on a flat area between Makhaza and the pass. They were not visible at all from Makhaza. 2 of them immediately got up and looked around - we had the distinct feeling they were looking for more hikers and where our gear/camp was. Luckily we had hidden our packs very well. We obviously made them uncomfortable because it didn't take long before they moved on and down the pass, yelling at us at times. We just sat and watched them.
