TOPIC: Long Weekend

Long Weekend 31 Jul 2011 19:16 #3476

So who is making it a long weekend next weekend and where are you planning to hike?

I am still looking at a few options whatching the weather and the amount of snow and ice that could be in the passes.

We were planning on going up Ships Prow and down Apes Pass, but we have already started considering easier alternatives cause of the amount of snow! Remains to be seen how much of it melts during the week.

Up the Bell Traverse and down Tseketseke Pass, but also depend on the amount of snow left.

Looks like more wet weather is on its way for the weekend, with the chance of more snow. We are also considering going up Ntonjelana Pass, down Mlambonja and back to the Mnweni at Contour Path level. We are figuring we may as well make use of the smugglers trail blazing a path up the pass for us, added to the fact the pass follows ridges and not a gully.

I can't believe it - 4 weeks ago I was on a mountaineering trip on Vancouver Island, Canada, where it was supposed to be summer. The snow was still up to 3m thick there (compacted!), and trudging through the snow our progress was too slow to walk to the intended peaks, climb them and walk out in time. Now, once again, snow is hampering my plans!

Yay, more weather!

I'll be studying for a management accounting exam, anyone want to swap places?! You have no idea how tempted I have been to just ignore studying and go for a hike this weekend, but I just really can't afford the required energy so close to my exams (7 weeks 5 days to go ) ...

Ok, now to go back to deluding myself that the Drakensberg was destroyed by a nuclear bomb that somehow doesn't impact on me even though I am less than 100km away (as the crowe flies) so that I am not distracted from studying...
