TOPIC: High altitude hikes in central/northern berg

High altitude hikes in central/northern berg 19 Dec 2009 00:47 #792

Hi

I would like to know of any other high altitude (day) hikes in the berg other than the amphitheater.

Training for Kilimanjaro so would like to get some time at high altitude.

Any help will most appreciated.

There's Cathedral Peak from the hotel and also The Rhino from Garden Castle. Both are longish days at get you up to 3000m. And both are excellent hikes worth doing in their own right.

Not sure about any long-lasting altitude benefits though. To acclimatise, you'd have to spend a few days on top, the benefits would wear off soon after the trip and wouldn't help much for 5895m It may help to get a feel for how your body reacts to moderate altitude? I certainly notice a whole lot more huffing and puffing when slogging up those escarpment hills for the first day or two of an overnight hike!

That's true Stijn, the acclimatisation won't last. Still, there is value in training the body with long sustained uphills.

Cathedral Peak and the Rhino are excellent choices - those will help a lot towards getting fit. Another good choice would be a scramble up the North summit of Sterkhorn (Monk's Cowl area). Cleft Peak (Cathedral Peak area) via Organ Pipes and back down again can be done in a day too, but it's a pretty long day.

Keep the Berg clean, keep the Berg free!

Hi guys

Thanks for the responses.

We hiked up the Amphitheater on Saturday. Did it via the chain ladders (with a lot of me convincing the others that it's not that bad).

Was planning of hiking up to Cathedral Peak on Sunday but none of us could wake up early so went to Monk's cowl and started hiking to Blind man's corner. Half way the weather started getting bad so we got to about 2000m and then turned back.

I agree that the acclimatisation won't last at all. but we wanted to go us (as you say) to get a feel for how our bodies react. Also the doc told us by going up higher the weekend before our trip, our bodies will acclimatise quicker. not sure how true this is but I figured it can't hurt.

We leaving on Saturday so no more hard training for us till we get back.
