Nepal elections postponed again

The Maoists have been demanding that Nepal be declared a republic before the November 22 elections, even though the King has already been totally stripped of his powers.

Due to the deadlock they withdrew from the interim government in Nepal on 19 September 2007. This was quite a blow to the peace process, though apparently the Maoists have stated that they will not return to an armed struggle. The November elections were subsequently cancelled on 05 October 2007. This is now postponed well into next year.

Where does this leave the tourists in the peak of the October/November season? So far things are relatively peaceful, and we would not advise anyone to change their travel plans to Nepal at this point in time. Be prepared though for the usual protests and strikes.
