Here are links to escarpment spots in those areas

www.yr.no/place/South_Africa/KwaZulu-Natal/Cockade/long.html

They both use different models, so going by the "average" forecast is probably a reasonable idea in terms of your planning.

In my experience, the longer range forecasts can be inaccurate and the two can differ quite a bit, but generally closer to the time they tend to agree more with each other.

Thank you, JonWells. I will add these locations to my "watch list"

Hi all

Myself and two others are heading to the Berg this Saturday (been planning all year, the time has finally come!!).

We plan to hike Sunday 25 Sept to Friday 30 Sept and start / finish at Cathedral Peak. Exact route to be confirmed, but we plan to spend about 2 nights on the escarpment and 3 nights at contour level (subject to change, as per my previous confused posts).

My question is - which is the most accurate weather forecast site? I check Mountain Weather Forecast, yr.no and Accuweather bi-daily for the past two weeks. According to MWF's 9-day forecast for Thaba Ntlenyaya there is no snow forecast, but according to yr.no there is a possibility of snow on Wed / Thurs (with Friday morning a crisp -13 on Mafadi). I therefore conclude that the two sites are not in agreement as to whether the approaching cold front will make it to the Berg or pass along the coast. This will have a huge effect on our planning, as we are technically prepared for snow but do not want to take any chances.

(Apologies admins if this post is in the wrong thread!)

Your advice on would be appreciated.

Regards,
Gerhard

Try the link below - be sure to select the correct range, subrange and mountain! Also there are ASL choices, photos and info. Check the variance between the bottom temperatures and the temperatures at the top.
We found this site accurate and helpful.

Not quite a weather forecast, but if you ever need to know what the exact conditions are on top of Mike's Pass in real-time, here's a link to the weather station there: lognet.saeon.ac.za:8088/mikes_pass/index.html

Thx Chris

Like I said, the link at the bottom of the page displays half off page,(out of the grey box) on my PC. I'm sure it would be the same with others.

The idea for this page was sparked by Boerkie, who suggested using the weather widgets from snow-foreacast.com. Instead of cluttering up the sites with various widgets, I am collecting them on this page, more will be added in time. A quick link to this page called "Drakensberg Weather" appears at the bottom of each page for convenient quick checking.

Some Berg weather sites were already discussed on this thread:
www.vertical-endeavour.com/forum/14-drakensberg-general/1526-drakensberg-weather-sites.html
Some of these sites will still be incorporated into this page. If you have any ideas on how to improve this page, and if you come across any other handy widgets, let me know.
