Mount Durnford

I mostly go directly up the nose of Durnford to cross over (the left hand skyline in Vikings pic) - does anyone else use this route?

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Do you have photos? I would be interested in seeing what this line looks like.

Here is a pic standing at the edge looking up "Durnfords Nose" ,the whole route visible in this pic but it was pretty much the same the whole way if I remember correctly.

Possibly due to signal bounce/poor signal etc.

I just registered now that the track in discussion above was my own. :cheer:
That track is spot on, there is a route up that way, its what I was referring to as the nose earlier. It has a small bit of exposure (scenic though) and may require packs to be hauled up separately, so the gap being referred to in this thread would be a better option in that respect. I have used it on GT's and have seen the shepherds use it too. On the occasion of that recording, I went to the summit cairn of Durnford, hence the sharp detour to the 3294m summit. I know I have some sort of photo of it somewhere, will have to dig it up.

Ah right - well that explains it then. Good to know there is another route.

I was told (no forumites names beginning with "G" mentioned :P ) that the Durnford Gap was the only way through, bar a massive detour into Lesotho.

Hmmm, I wonder who you might be referring to

My wording was probably "as far as I know, there are no other routes without a massive detour into Lesotho". After all, only a sith deals in absolutes...

Diverian, in the pic where the lady is pointing to the South, do you just walk around the ridge (i.e. on the snow covered grass closest to the escarpment) or do you have to climb up and over the rockbands to the right?

I know I have other photos of Durnford's nose somewhere but can locate them right now. These are not my own - credit to Gina and Mike.
