Thanks for the report back, sorry you didn't make it to the top (now there's a reality of peak climbing, one doesn't always get it right the first time).

We have picked up many bags of litter in that whole area before. The smugglers are also major culprits.

I'd like to encourage everyone to actively report this kind of thing to the OIC at the KZN Wildlife offices at the end of the hike (ask to speak to them directly, avoid telling the person manning the office). We need to create a positive involvement and interest from the hiking community about this kind of thing. And be encouraged to do a little clean-up yourself too.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Hi Scag

Could you mean INTUNJA ? I thing another name is GATBERG which explins it perfectly. it is a freestanding peak with a wacking great big hole through the top. The SAAF use it for training excersises with the choppers as it has good [safe] approaches for a touch landing.

HIKING: From The Monks Cowl station one can go via the Sphinx up to the contour path at Blind-mans corner. Then NW on contour towards Hlatikulu nek [Keith bush camp]. at the junction splitting SSW to Keith Bush you will need to continue NW dropping into the valley. From here a faint path can be seen running up to the hole in the peak.[you will have spotted INTUNJA by now unless there is mist or low cloud!] There is a flat camp-spot in the valley.

ADVENTURE: Take the Sphinx from MC station. At Blind-Mans corner contour S to W to Cowl Fork campsite. Up Cowl fork RIGHT HAND SIDE whwre it forks, over the saddle between the Cowl and Cathkinand down to Keith Bush. Then North to INTUNJA and back via the contour path.

Enjoy.

NB. Grays pass, Keith bush trail to the contour is well used by Dagga Smugglers, so lock up tight at night.

Apart from Zulu Cave, are there any cave options for an overnighter includung Gatberg?
Zulu Cave is a nice cave, but the view is not overly inspiring.
Thanks in advance

It doesn't seem great, further down the valley from Zulu cave

Thanks Smurf.
Any suggestions, or do you think Zulu Cave probably the best option? No co-ordinates for Eagle cave, and not on the map.

Zulu cave is definitely your best bet.
Just choose your route from Gatberg to the cave carefully though, we did this a month or so ago and found going along the Mhlwazini quite overgrown so went down a ridge from the contour path.
See below: blue to Gatberg, red the contour path, white the normal path to Zulu cave and yellow the ridge we went down

Thanks a mill for the info. Know the ridge you're talking about
Safe to stash packs somewhere where your yellow and blue paths meet?

This is looking up the ridge you would come down. Its the only real way down though so you should find it, to the right of this pic (your left as you coming down) are steep cliffs and a waterfall
Edit: ok perfect then if you know :)

From Zulu Cave to Intunja (or vice versa) it's a lot easier to use the ridge on the true right of the valley in which Zulu Cave is, linking with Smurf's blue line about above the word "to" on his map.

It is usual to leave packs somewhere on the slopes, and collect them on the way back down, and quite safe to do so.
