Thanks diverian and intrepid

We had our pre-hike planning braai last night and we're already at 18 people, so we're probably going to camp close to the top of Ntonjelana instead of Easter Cave. It doesn't look like there's enough flattish grass in front of Easter cave for a couple of tents. Or is there? I can't really tell from the photo?

Thanks for the help. It looks like I've found another forum to waste some time on instead of studying.

Dirk

Welcome to the forum dirktalma.

You initial thanks should have been directed to tonymarshall, since he replied, not me. ;)

A group of 18 is way to big for Easter Cave and no, you can't camp infront, there is a grass slope. Consider camping along the KwaKwatsi in the vicinity of Easter Cave. Alternatively there are also some flat areas near the escarpment edge just South of Ntonjelana Pass. You can get brilliant sunrise shots from there that silhouette the Cathedral Range. Only issue with this spot is that it puts you very close to the pass at night and there may be a lot of smuggler traffic passing by.

Waterfall Cave has been messed up because it was used as a kraal. It is full of livestock manure and large parts of the sleeping areas have actually collapsed/eroded. You may be able to spread your party out along the usable parts of the cave, but I suspect you will have more fun camping elsewhere.

There is a nice camping spot further upstream from the cave, along the main river. It is on the smuggling route that continues from the pass (that route does not go by the cave). Only issue again is that you will have smugglers walk right by your tents at night (this happened to us, a group that diverian was part of), so you need to decide if thats something you can live with.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

@dirktalma As intrepid said here is no level area in front of the cave for tenting.

Given the size of the party and that you will need tents in any case, I would suggest camping out in the secluded valley west of Ntonjelane pass but not near the top of the pass itself. There are some nice valleys that drain down towards the saddle as well as a bowl further east of those valleys before you get to the main Ntonjelane valley. Those secluded valleys would be nice and peaceful. I'm not sure if you plan on going up Mnweni pass that same day - if so, consider Mponj or Ledgers cave as it will make the Mnweni pass day more manageable.

Anyone been to Waterfall cave recently?
My mates and I are planning a 5 day photography hike in June (MCC - Up Fangs, to Mnweni Pinnicles, to Saddle, to Waterfall cave, to MCC). I remember that people have said it was filthy but the info I see is from a while ago. Any more recent updates?

A fraction better but still dirty, will expand on this a bit later.

Used the cave last in September 2012. I had the impression then that the use of it as a livestock shelter may have stopped. The manure layer was not fresh and seemed to be more decomposed. Like most Mnweni Caves, it is still used by the locals however and you will have to deal with litter, fire places, and that general messy feeling. In my experience, this cave still has the grungiest feel of all Mnweni caves that I've used - it is still usable though. Basically only the far end of the cave can be used for sleeping now - you have to scramble beyond the rocky bit in the middle (under the waterfall) to get there. The other sleeping area where you normally enter the cave has now completely collapsed - this is another major change. The soil shelf next to it is too narrow and too messed up for use. There is a minor sleeping area, which is kind of its own cave, which you walk by on the way in to the main cave, though this has always been a bit too dark, wet and low-roofed for my liking.

Hi, I see this thread is quite old. Anyone been to this cave lately, and can report on its condition? Thank you
