Southern Berg Options

Hi All,

We are keen on exploring South of Giants. We have never been to Loteni / Vergelegen, etc. being JHB based we kind of stick to the north and central berg.

So with that being said, can anyone recommend a 3-4 day loop, in the south?

Not too keen on overly exposed passes.

Thanks in advance!

For Loteni - I've done Redi and Buttress passes as a very easy three day hike, I believe Hlatimba and Ka-Masihlenga passes make a popular loop that'd probably be long enough for a good three or four day loop.

There are numerous options at Garden Castle. Access is easy though the drive is long.

1. Up Wilson's/Tsepeng, down Mashai/Mzimude
2. Up Mzimude, down Tsepeng/Mashai

Of these passes, only Mashai has a path. Tsepeng is somewhat exposed in places, depending on the route. Further north are the Mzimkhulu Passes if you want to do a longer route.

Thanks for the input...ja its a bit far.

We are thinking going up Redi Pass, Summit the peak, then hook South come down Hlathimba South and just contour back to Loteni Camp. That should do us for 3 days, I think.

I've just hiked in the Lotheni area this weekend. We ascended Redi Pass and descended Hlatimba North after over nighting in Hlatimba north cave. We did it as a 1 nighter, we didn't take a tent and carried fairly light packs.
If you are going to do it as a 2 nighter I would suggest reversing it and camping in the valley below the Hlatimba passes, it looks a great area for camping. The only down side is the the down climb of the scramble section in Redi Pass, which if you are averse a bit of exposure may not be to your liking especially in the wet. Another option would be to head further North on your second day and head down Ka-Masihenga Pass, however not having done it can't give any further advice on it.

Enjoy.

Hey Jamcligeo,

Thanks for the heads up and feedback. What is the condition of the roads atm? Did you go via Nottingham Road or via Himeville?
Due to some logistical changes we have to skip the South... most likely going to do a Giants area hike. Up Bannerman down Giants Pass.

I took the road from Nottingham Road, I was expecting it to be worse than it was, my little NP200 bakkie managed fine even in the wet (a bit slippy at times). I probably manged to travel at an average of about 50km/h, so still a long drive on dirt.

Thanks for the info regarding the road. Slow and steady wins the race.
