With the snow we experienced the following tricky scrambles on the Bell Traverse (in order from Twins Cave towards Bugger Gulch Gully):

- the first saddle you reach which gives you a view towards the South, about 500m from Twins Cave. There are some steep steps down on a narrow ledge above a deep gully. I don't think this is normally a problem but the entire ledge was snow-covered and slippery (pictured in photo 3 above).

- a step-up across a small gap over steep ground, as the path starts contouring around the Mitre. Again snow covered and probably not usually an issue.

- a traverse across a rock band on the Eastern slopes of the Mitre just before reaching the slopes of the Chessmen. This is the most serious section as it contours above a cliff and has very little to use for handholds. Much trust was placed in the good-old berg grass for a large step down onto a snowy ledge. This section is usually tricky in dry conditions as well.

- a few easy rocky steps on the zig-zags down to the Three Sisters

- a steep rocky band which needs to be crossed a few hundred metres before Bell Cave.

- Bugger Gulch Gully itself was very slippery with the normal path obscured by the snow.

Hope that helps.

Great weekend in the berg in Injasuthi area.

Blazing sunny days, perfect for melting snow!

This is the closest we came to the snow:

Well guys..returned from my trip and was really disappointed in the weather. Was expecting some drama on Thursday and maybe Friday but the skies was as clean as a whistle. Did lots of exploring trecking allong the Bell traverse and exploring over the north side of Cathedral Peak. Had lots of water in melting snow so no problems there. Woudl have to return again, and again, but it's time to move one and explore aother areas. Just inserting a picture here which should give you an idea of what it looked like when we were there.

The weather was very dissapointing, indeed. We explored the Sehlabathebe area. Didnt see one cloud the whole weekend.
On our way driving up to the berg, we saw the cold front moving out to sea. Dont think it even reached Mthata.

The whole area was also very dry, with very little snow left on the Knuckles after last week's falls. The tarn above tarn cave had some water, the others were all dry.

The temperature was also quite mild the whole weekend.

Awesome and unique area of the berg though, will return soon. :)

Hard luck Plouw, yeah it seems the weather is turning horribly stable, we'll have to hope for something big to happen in August or September!
