Hi all. We are looking at doing Tugela Gorge next month. I've looked for info but I can't find answers on 2 questions : 1) No one mentions camping at the Gorge. Can this be done? If not, why not? Secondly, is the water safe to drink from the river or do you need to carry your own?
Thanks for the advice hikers!

Hi KerryLou,
No wild camping is allowed within RNNP you can camp at Mahai campsite which is really nice. The water upstream in the riverbed is drinkable.

The ‘why not’? Is to protect the environment because RNNP was designed as a net to catch a lot of visitors. If camping were allowed outside the designated camp sites, the area would become degraded pretty quickly.
