Below is a snippet from a previous round on how to rate the images:

In the screen-shot below you can see that you give the rating near the bottom of the page. If you slide your mouse pointer along the stars you can give it a rating by clicking on one of the stars(1 star being the lowest rating, 5 stars being the highest). The actual rating result of the image is viewed near the top. If you slide your mouse pointer over those stars you will see the exact score and how many times the image was rated.
Please note the following:
- the rating result is weighted (it takes into account the number of ratings as well as the average)
- you cannot rate an image more than once
- you cannot rate your own image
- you should rate all the images for the competition (not just your favourite one), the more each image is rated, the better

When Hiking from Malealea to Semonkong in 2013 we slept over at Ha Hlalele(Ketane village). The chief's wife asked her son(Philip) to guide us to the Ketane falls. At the lookout point he asked me to take a picture of him. When I returned to Ketane earlier this month I gave a printout to his sister. I couldn't find either him or his mother.

The rating average is weighted according to Baye's theorem, which takes into account the number of votes an image has, rather than a simple average of the rating. The more ratings an image has, the more credible the average rating becomes - so the theory goes. This prevents a single rating of 5/5 for an image getting a top rating. But if several people give the image 5/5 then the weighted average gets closer and closer to 5.

Back in July 1985, when the way to Maquela's Kraal was still a sled-wide sandy track, we came across this bright-eyed boy waiting for the winter sun to chase away the night's cold. He was the sort of fellow who looked like he was going to make something of his life. He's been on the wall of my office in Oxford for more than ten years now. I wonder where else he is?

Thanks for the explanation Intrepid. One minor adjustment I would suggest is that during the voting phase, hits and number of votes are displayed for each image but not the average rating. Excluding the average rating during the voting phase would be one way to minimise tactical voting! It would also make the outcome more of a moment.
