Layers of light

A spectrum of color - Sunrise from Ifidi Cave. Nothing quite as invigorating as a majestic sunrise after a stormy night. Our previous day was a mixed bag of blazing sun, rain, lightning and the strangest of hail storms - all worthwhile and put into perspective when the 1st light of day presents you with such a view...

Tequila Sunrise

A breath-taking sunrise over a very dry Tugela Falls during June 2015.
It was so bitterly cold, we started the day with a little shot of something in our coffee...

Sentinel's Sunrise

In January 2011, after climbing Angus-Leppan, me and Biggs_ZA decided to sleep on to Sentinel peak and get up early to view the sunrise. This picture of me was taken by Biggs_ZA.

Great entries so far!

There are one or two entries that do not have a title posted on this thread with the links and pics. All participants please make sure you post all the right info on this thread.

Remember to think ahead a bit - have a look at the upcoming themes and see if you can get some good shots, especially with the Easter period coming up. Remember too that entries for the 4th quarter must have been included in a previously posted trip report (or mini report) from 2016, so a good strategy would be to include a lot of potential pictures in your trip write-ups.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Madonna Awakes

In late April 2014 we did a mini-traverse from the Chain Ladders. Our goal had been Fangs Cave, but one member in our group was not feeling well, so we decided to tent early just behind Mbundini Abby. The result was this spectacular sunrise over Madonna and her Worshippers the next morning. What made it all the more special were the clouds, which are not seen as often as one moves into the winter months.

Butterscotch Rockeries

Did a four day trip up Fangs Pass, along the top and down Rockeries Pass in December last year. Was greated to this beautiful sight waking up at Mponjwane Cave on the morning of our last day.

WOW!
I just went through all the images that were submitted for this quarter. Amazing!
Well done to everyone that took part in Q1, Soul of the Rising Sun. The images are wow!

I have a favour to ask. With all your permissions, may I create an album on our website, www.adventureworksafrica.co.za , specifically for these images? I will obviously credit the owner and VE in each image and offer a short explanation of the album. The winning photo (once chosen) will get the first position in the album.

I look forward to hearing from you all.

Regards,
Kobus

Submissions are now closed. I have reviewed the entries with the moderators, and we are happy for voting to continue to April 10. We have noted several entries have image dimensions which are slightly below those specified in the general rules, but have agreed that the quality of the images is still acceptable, which is the point of the rule. We may review the minimum dimensions in future.

I have included the rules pertaining to voting below for everyone's benefit:

19. The competition is governed by overall rating of the images, rather than the number of votes. This means you don’t just vote for your favourite one, rather, you give each entry a rating. The rating is done in the applicable gallery album by means of a 5 star system, where 5 stars is the highest rating and 1 star is the lowest. The gallery software is set to calculate weighted ratings according to Baye’s theorem, rather than a purely arithmetic average, which means the total number of votes for all images in the entire gallery on the site (not just the applicable album) is taken into consideration in the calculation. This means, for example, that less votes for an image will be assumed to be less credible than if it had more votes. So each rating as well as the number of ratings for an image is important. This helps prevent a situation where an image can get a top rating by just one or two votes, and it also helps reduce the chances of having a tie.

20. In the event of a tie, the tiebreaker will be by means of a vote. Seven days will be allocated for the voting and the total vote count must be a minimum of ten. If the total is not attained within this period, an extension may be granted, or the moderators may settle the matter in any way they deem appropriate at the time. Only members of VE may participate in this vote, and a forum thread may be used to conduct the vote by means of a poll. The moderators may, at their discretion, resort to a different voting method at the time.

21. Only registered members of Vertical Endeavour are able to give ratings, and members are prevented from voting for their own entry. Participants are allowed to canvas support for their entry from family, friends and colleagues, even if they are not current members of VE, as long as this is done freely and there is no material gain or coercion involved. In these cases, the supporters should register on the site and must give each entry a fair rating, not just for one entry. Each person is only allowed to vote through a single profile on the site. Monitoring will be in place to check for double or fake profiles and for unfair voting tactics.

22. Each round must have a minimum of 5 entries, and each entry must have a minimum of 5 votes for it to be valid. If this is not attained, the moderators may extend the deadlines and take any action or decision deemed necessary to validate the competition and keep it fair for everyone.

23. After voting is closed and the votes have been finalised, the moderators will review all aspects of the round to check that everything is valid and has been adhered to. Once they have reached agreement among themselves, the results and winner will be officially announced. If there is any sign of irregularities or foul play, even just by suspicion, the applicable entries will be disqualified, or in the worst case scenario the entire round may be deemed to be invalid and no prize will be awarded.

Good luck!

@kbresler: happy for your to do that from VE's side, provided the image owners consent to their images being posted there too.
