Are boots ever totally waterproof?

“Yes,” the sales person insists, “these boots are totally waterproof!”. You look forward to many comfortable miles in the Berg with your new boots, come sun, rain or snow. When the rain does set in, you take care to put on your expensive rain paints over your knee high gaiters, which cover your Nikwax-soaked, Gortex-lined boots. Should keep the water out, you think. But it’s only a matter of time before you feel the warm, damp feeling in your feet as your boots’ limited waterproofing is breached, and the Dragon wins once again!

Familiar feeling anyone? I use some of the best boots I can get my hands on and appreciate the beating they endure in the Berg. But never be fooled by sales people that insist they are totally water proof. This simply isn’t true. And their ability to keep water out diminishes rapidly with use. You can be sure that anyone insisting that a particular boot will keep you 100% dry in the Berg has obviously not done any significant hiking there!

Try rain for hours on end, walking through many miles of soaking wet vegetation (which is anything from ankle high up to your shoulders), and endless crossing or rivers and streams – nature still outdoes technology! I have accepted these limitations over time and have come to appreciate the Salomon Tech-Amphibians, a wonderful hybrid of trail runners and aqua shoes. When the going gets wet, I just give up trying to stay dry and switch to these. My boots hitch a ride on my pack until it gets drier again.

My experience is that one really needs to know how to drive gaiters... I made the crucial mistake once of tucking my rain pants into my gaiters, causing the rain to run into my "waterproof" boots... They have never been the same...

Haha .... a long day on a boggy escarpment beats my trusty Sportivas everytime ..... just gotta grin and accept it .... accept what the Berg throws at us and be grateful for it...

I've recently had it suggested to me by more than one person at various outdoor stores that I return any Gortex-lined boots that get wet. Gortex is "Guaranteed to keep you dry" - apparently a life-time guarantee. I've also had a certain shop assistant not believe me that they do get wet! Hmm, I'm wondering how many of these people have experienced harsh Berg conditions for themselves.

Every Gortex-lined boot I've ever owned, or that my friends have used, have leaked at some point.

Nonetheless, I will try to get my leaky boots replaced sometime. It could prove to be an interesting exercise! :P

I'm looking at getting myseld the La Sportiva Typhoon's. Any thoughts on these would be much appreciated.

The reason I want to go with these, is that I want to do normal 1 day hikes (Pilanesberg/Kruger/Drakensberg), and some more strenous hikes, but never more than a couple of days, and no hectic mountain climbing (routes like Sentinel to Cathedral Peak) etc.

The Tibets seem overkill for this, and the price is crazy !

I think you guys will laugh, but I've done various 1 day hikes in the Berg (Sentinel up the gulley to the hut and back, Amphitheatre gorge) with my Merrell tekkies, as well as a 5 day Transkei hike, have to admit my feet were done after that ... so it's time for boots haha.

The only boots that i have seen that are waterproof are montrail gtx. My La sportivas Tibets are wet and the Montrails are still perfect. Breaks my heart to see a cheaper boot so much better and yes they are both lined with gore tex.

My Salomon Mega Trek's have done well, but a friend's Scarpas seem to be the best. If you really want to stay dry get really good gaitors, use them properly and thick gortex boots or plastics. Most of the water that ends up in your boots is probably coming in at the ankle.

Frosty ice i also thought the water was coming in from the ankle so on my last hike i took extra caution,as soon as there was any moisture about i put my gaiters on.

When i took my boots off because my feet were wet, one could clearly see my pants were dry and just the front of the boot was wet inside.

So here is a way if you want to check if your boots are still waterproof, fill them with water and see where the leak.

I agree. Its also the only way to try and get all the sand out of the gortex. Which seems to be a big cause of the boots wearing out.

According to the Salesmen at C U M (acronym to protect the identity of same salesmen)some of their boots are - quote "Totally waterproof" unquote -.
Gentle questioning often indicates that these good souls have never gone above 1800m, and whilst having 'often played in the snow', this has been done on the front lawn of Champagne Castle Hotel ****.

So lets look to the "TRUE Men of the Mountains."
Whilst they would, on any given evening, silently remove your fancy R2800.00 GoreTex clad, Vibram soled boots from your tent flap, and make haste into the inky dark - Guess what? - Give them a week and they're back in GUMBOOTS! Now those are as waterproof as a Ducks A**e! Ever walked in GUMBOOTS!?

Hope that kinda answers the question.
