We had a fantastic hike the long weekend,Friday we camped at Centenary Hut and had a few storms through out the night. Saturday morning early we went up the Northern high route to Corner pass,awesome...
In the pass we took a path leading left out the pass,it topped out less than a km from top of Corner.Don't know if this is an official pass? Its a good path with only the last part that's a bit scary.
onwards to Upper Injisuthi cave we had all the weather thrown at us! Saw 8 smugglers going towards Judge pass, and a few horses braving the weather. We reached Upper Injesuthi Cave at about 4pm.It was wet with snow in it and the wind was howling, only really space for about 3-5 people in the far end. We decided to hike to waterfall and pitch tents there....much cosier than cave.
Sunday morning we hiked up past Injesuthi Dome and to Mafadi with the wind blowing very hard.Reached Mafadi at 0930,awesome views and alot of snow still. We headed towards Leslie's Pass on high ridge, enjoying the views. We saw no Basothos the whole way.We reached the camp site at the bottom of the pass at 4pm and what a nice camp site...after the two previous nights this is paradise!
And of course the following day's trip back to camp, stopping at Marble Baths...man that's a nice place after a long hike.
Thanks to all the people that have erected cairns all the way along river to bottom of Leslie's Pass, you cant miss them and its easy finding paths. Also thanks to you guys at VE for input
....fitness and hiking light!
I'll do Mafadi anyday again

This sounds like a new smugglers pass to me. Two or three years ago there was nothing but very occasional hiker traffic mostly up Corner pass. Then about 18 to 24 months ago there were posts on the forum here of the multiple paths that had appeared above Centenary hut - which I assume is the northern high lead in?
If correct that this is a new smugglers pass, then the interesting thing is the extent to which these goes go to be undetected. There are easy, well established passes nearby but these guys will carve out an improbably route rather than use them.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Thanks for the write-up Hermann.
Have also heard about the variation from Corner Pass (I assume its the same thing I have heard of). The smugglers really seem to be liking this area currently.
