"The man was walking on the path when it is believed that he slipped, this resulted in him falling and tumbling about 15 to 30m down a slope," spokesperson Robert Mckenzie said in a statement.
"He was injured and unable to walk. Members of his hiking group called emergency services."
The man was airlifted to a hospital in Pietermaritzburg.

Correction is due here. The rescue team on the ground was Ezemvelo Staff and they did the hard work. MCSA involvement was only the overall coordination including getting EMRS to task the AMS Medivac helicopter to do the air lift. The pilot was able to get in and land in a confined space well above the planned landing zone saving the ground team a much longer slog.
As it all turned out he was not as seriously injured as first thought; so a good outcome.

Also, when it comes to security incidents often the picture can be skewed or even sensationalised when it is second and third hand information. The more first hand information we can get of security and rescue incidents, the better.

Durban - Paramedics and rescue technicians are travelling in a military helicopter to rescue an injured hiker in a remote region of the Northern Drakensburg.
KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said emergency service personnel first received word of the injured hiker on Tuesday night, and that a 15 Squadron Oryx helicopter had been despatched to assist at 06:00 on Wednesday morning.
“Detail surrounding exactly what is wrong with the hiker and why the individual needs to be rescued are scant at this stage.
"An EMS paramedic along with members of the Mountain Club are onboard the helicopter and are currently in the air,” he said.
