Drakensberg Gardens

I am looking for feedback from someone who has stayed at the campsite at Drak Gardens / Garden Castle recently.

Is it in reasonable condition for tenting or should it be avoided?

Some advice would be appreciated.

Yea I go there quite often, theres nothing wrong with the Garden Castle campsite at all. Each campsite has its own braai and a flat concrete slab to chill on. The showers/toilets are a little rustic, but pretty clean with gas heated water for the showers. There is also a separate area with hot water for washing dishes etc. Great base from which to do some day hikes!

Just be sure to keep your food locked safely away, the baboons once turned our campsite upside down when we were climbing Rhino 2 years back!

This pic was taken a few weeks back showing the upper section of the campsite:

This thread brought back an experience from about 15 years ago when the Camp Site was (unbeknownst to me) undergoing renovations and thus unavailable ... after an exhausting 8 hours on the road (and a further hour waiting for the office to open after lunch) I was informed by the officer on duty, after referring to his OIC, that I "may camp anywhere in the mountains, except in the camp-site". Life's great ironies !

Of course not being suitably equipped to hike out overnight, we ended up in the Drakensberg Gardens Caravan Park which was noisy, waterlogged and had moles pushing up under the tent all night ! Also came way too close to being toasted (amongst the pine trees) by an electric storm of note - spent the evening sheltering in their decrepit old outbuildings !

Ahh, the memories !!! :-)

Also consider Swiman Hut, it costs R75 per person per night, it sleeps 22, has beds, running hot water, electricity, firewood, a fire place and a braai place, slept there is July, it was really nice considering the cost, although it partially defeats the point if your plan is to go camping...

Thanks for the feedback guys.
From what I understand there is a caravan park before the hotel and a campsite higher up?
Is Swiman hut near the campsite or does it require a hike in?

Swiman hut is about 200m from the car park, but there is a road to it (the road is very uneven and is untarred, but only about 1km long, you don't need a 4X4 or anything). The turn off is marked by a large rock with the name "Swiman Hut" on it. The hut is on the giant's cup trail, its right near the mouth of the sleeping beauty valley. The campsite is about 50m from the car park (the carpark is between the hut and the campsite) and is on the start of the Rhino Peak trail.
