TOPIC: Sleeping Solutions

Sleeping Solutions 18 Dec 2010 21:21 #2099

Just out of interest, what do you all you guys sleep on when you hike? Is the roll up foam mat enough for you, or do use something additional like an air mattress or self inflatable mat?

Re: Sleeping Solutions 24 Dec 2010 03:49 #2110

I use a self inflating mattress, ie i inflate it myself It does go up to some degree, but i need to add quite a bit air as well. However it works well and gives me a better sleep than just a foam mattress. During winter though, I use a combination of the two, the foam as a base to keep out the cold and the inflating for the comfort. Works well.

Ditto

Except I use both always. So I can sleep like a log.

[Self inflating mattress indeed! I sat watching it for half an hour the first time, and then realised what the Cape Onion Mart salesman meant when he said 'self inflating'. SELF - Because to date I have had no one else in the crew offer to inflate it for me. PuuuUFF. Gives one smooooth headrush at +3000 :X ]

I use a Thermarest Prolite 4 which was a wondeful relief to aching hips from many nights on a foam pad. It is in its 7th year and going strong, unlike many of the other brands. And yes, it too needs some assistance with inflation. As I understand it, this is only an issue in really cold, consistent temps since the moisture from your breath forms ice crystals inside. Not a major consideration in the Berg. My shoulders have started to ache in recent times if I sleep on my side, so I'm looking at an even thicker mat (the above is 3.8cm). Am considering this one - saw it in Canada. Same dimensions and weight (680g) as the above, but thicker - this one is designed to be inflated (and thus can't be used in Canadian winters for example).

@ st2

You could sleep on a cold stone floor and still sleep like a log!!!
