Hey Digz, as far as Pillar Cave and Pillar Cave Annex are concerned, it is a very straight forward path from the car park, about 1 hour and you're there. I was at Bushmans cave a few months back, its quite a lot further and I remember the path being quite overgrown

Digz, if you haven't been there for 15 years, then the advice to to rather stick to well-trodden paths is worth heeding. Keep the initial experience easy and memorable.
Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

but the good side to the Berg, compared to the W Cape is that there are paths and you won't be digging fynbos out of your shins for 3 weeks after the hike is over. Hats off to themeda triandra.....

Funny thing is...it was while living in CPT that I did the Mont-aux-sources to Cathedral traverse, now I've been in JHB for almost 3 years and the closest I've got to the berg is this forum. But by end of Feb that will have all changed i hope

Well pleased to say i have made reservations for 1 night at Injasuthi and 1 night in Grindstone caves with the aim to go (or return) via Cataract valley. I'm trying to keep it easy and fun for the kids first Berg sleepover. I'm grateful for all the advice from everyone...if this trip goes well, you have all left me with many good options for future trips. Trip is planned for 25/26/27 Feb. I don't know who is more excited, the kids or me...

Awesome weekend! I have a family with some stiff muscles, sunburned cheeks and Huge smiles on their faces! Trip was fantastic. We ended up spending Friday night at the main camp, Saturday took a slow hike up to Grindstone caves, slept there...we were the only ones, although a group came through at about 5pm from the other direction telling us they were looking for Lower Injesuthi cave...I think they slept in the other Grindstone cave. Sunday we headed back via Cataract valley. The girls really had a great time and it was a very positive experience. We saw a Berg Adder, Eland, plenty baboons and a dung beetle
Absolutely nothing to complain about...lots of water, clearly marked trails (but needed the route description and map to be sure) and great weather. I was a bit disappointed that we didn't get to see the big peaks due to cloud cover the whole weekend which was a pity...although it didn't phase the kids.
All in all a great trip. Thanks everyone on this forum for the advice and help. Really is appreciated. I'll post some pics once I have downloaded and sorted through them.

Hi Digz
I'm also in the process of introducing the kids to hiking, and am keen to make sure its fun for them and not to hard.
We're starting with short Magaliesberg overnight and then a Magoebaskloof hut trail.
I see you slept in caves, which sounds like fun and less to carry.
Did you just sleep on mats, or put a tent flysheet up?
Cheers
Vaughn
