We discussed this topic on the GT, we all agreed that the best hiking chairs are as follows:

They are free, don't weigh anything and take up no space in your pack  . Jokes aside though I have never been much of a fan of these kinds of gimmicks (other than tiny tripods). If I take a break thats long enough to justify a chair I put my pack behind my head and use the slope of a grassy bank as a surface, cap over the eyes...

I would think though that while cooking if one can't find a rock this chair would actually be quite a good idea, depending on its weight. Ghaz you can't really cook while lying down and you will have a while to sit while cooking.

Hi The chair here is 600grams in weight and you cannot fit it in a pocket of your pants.

I used to carry one of those R30 tripod chairs they sell at Game. I found that I tended to hunch over quite badly when I sat on it, so had to deal with lower back pain after prolonged use. Yeah, no more of that, its rocks or the ground for me going forward!

It seems I'm one of the few who enjoys having a chair when cooking or kuiering in the Berg :)
I'm tired of my tripod chair though, does anyone know if something like this is available in South Africa:

I feel it is well worth the extra kilo, at least for more relaxed group hikes.

Yes, there is a place in Centurion selling bike gear for the offroad touring market. Can't remember their name at this moment but they are right next to John Voster, in the complex right next to the bP garage accross Lazarus Ford/Jaguar/Landrover. GPS for Africa or something like that.

I just cut off a section of my Thermarest hiking mattress and uses that around the camp. 2cm's worth of padding with very good insulation, it takes up virtually no space, weight just a couple of grams and you can use it anywhere :-)

Thanks Riaan, I'll have a look.

Edit:
They've got it, but for R1,950 (www.gps4africa.co.za/69_helinox)
Pretty much double what I was hoping for :(

For those who might be interested, Outdoor Warehouse now has a clone of the Helinox chair:
www.outdoorwarehouse.co.za/product/natural-instincts-lightweight-chair

Not sure how good it is, but it is nearly a third of the price.
