Hi there,
I did a 2 day return hike from sani top to Thabana Ntlenyana and back and was surprised at the difficulty.
I have attached my GPS tracks/route I thought to be most efficient:
This attachment is hidden for guests.
Perhaps there is a better route ? Please let me know
Regards

Thanks for pics of this trip that you uploaded in the galleries, zen.
The route you took is the normal "inland" route to or from Sani Pass. My own regular choice of "lekhalo" (pass) for crossing over the kaNtuba ridge is some 700m West of the one you took, but this is minor.
Following the escarpment is more difficult, though it does go along some interesting, "forgotten" parts of the Berg. The Tsatsa-la-Mangaung is an imposing, steep barrier separating Sani Pass from Mangaung Pass. From there, the slog up (or stumble down) the slope to kaNtuba Pass is roughly comparable to crossing the ridge further West as you did. Thereafter its an easy stroll along the Sehonghong valley approaching Nhlangeni Pass, from where the ascent of the Thabana Ntlenyana massif from the South-East is roughly the same as what you did. You can also get onto the Mohlesi Ridge and approach from the South-East (little bit longer uphill and no trails).
A variation for loops from Sani Pass would be to access the Mangaung valley via the Sani Flats (as you did), which bypasses the Tsatsa-la-Mangaung, then head up-river towards Mangaung Pass, then up to kaNtuba Pass and onwards. The return route would be the "inland" route as you did (which is quicker).

Hi there,
Thanks for this track, I cannot find many and it is going to help me much as I don't know the region.
I will come in decembre this year from Switzerland. I mountaineer in the alps (www.camptocamp.org/outings/437669/fr/triangle-du-tacul-contamine-grisolle) normally and like mountain biking as well.
I intend to climb the Sani Pass and Thabana peak with my mountain bike and as you seem to know all the routes, which is the most appropriate with a bike?
Thanks a lot for any advise.
JDS

Hello JDS
If you are going on a bicycle, then it may be best to follow the road from the top of Sani Pass all the way to the top of Black Mountain Pass and then try get to Thabana Ntlenyana from there. I have not done that, so cannot comment on its suitablity.
Attached though is a route I have used in the past. Slightly more efficient especially on a bicycle. I split the track into 3 sections. The first, from the top of Sani Pass is either on a decent path, or on flat, short grasslands that will be fine to cycle on. The next bit is steep, long grass, rocks and no path, you may have to carry the bicycle although you may manage to push it. The final one could be cycled for decent stretches at least on the downs and easily pushed for the rest
It should be a pretty good adventure doing this on a bike
Cheers
Andrew

Hi Zen 101,
Looking at your stava report, you did a great job up to sani pass!
I might by mistaken, your track seems to remine on the road. Did you go to the submit of Thabana Ntlenyana?
Anyway thanks fo the inspiration.
(I have done such distance and climb even if it is still a big challenge)

Hi AndrewP,
Thanks a lot for sharing this track. I'll try it and will report here the story of the adventure!
My idea right now is to start at around Hotel Sani pass leisure ressort (1500m) and climb up the pass to sani mountain lodge (2800m). The next day I will climb Thabana Ntlenyana (3400m) and down back to Hotel Sani pass leisure ressort.

First things first - lets define possible, Thabana has been reached from Sentinel Car Park in something like 35 hours. And similarly 100m has been run in under 10 seconds on a few occasions. By contrast, there are people such as myself who do Sentinel to Thabana in 9 days and run 100m in more than 20 seconds, trailing far behind when everyone else crosses the finish line. It all depends on many variables.
If weather is good, you get dropped off by the bridge 4.5km from Sani Top and picked up back there, you are fit, your pack is light and your navigation goes off without a hitch - it is a 30km moderately difficult day hike. If you have to walk the extra 9km, get lost, carry a pack over 5kg, have bad weather or aren't fit enough - it can easily turn into a nightmare.
If you are a novice, arrange a guide from Sani Mountain Lodge and train hard - then you should be fine. There are no guarantees though.
