Dragon's Wrath 2026 was created by intrepid
This is the place to gather and discuss all accidents and rescues in the Drakensberg for 2026. The most common are hiking related, though they can also result from other activities such as climbing and paragliding. The title of this thread is inspired by the book "Dragons Wrath" by Reg Pearse & James Byrom, and is an endeavour to continue on in that spirit.

The purpose of this is to:
* concatenate all information about these accidents to keep a concerned Drakensberg community informed;
* express solidarity and concern for those involved in the accidents;
* learn from mistakes made and to heed warnings of risks;
* maintain a publicly accessible historic record.

The purpose of this is not to:
* criticise or embarrass those involved;
* create media hype;
* create undue negative publicity for the Berg.

Just saw an article on Netwerk 24 ( www.netwerk24.com/nuus/aktueel/angseinde-aan-6-vroue-se-drakensberg-droomstaptog-op-nag-1-20260211-1014) about a recent incident near Tugela. Anyone know anything more about this? Very unusual for such large group to be directly targeted like this. I suppose the offenders must have watched them throughout the day and noted that they were a women-only group.

Can you copy paste here? I am not subscriber. I see they used a pic of Cathkin for the story, rather confusing for the topic of Tugela incident.

Hi. The article isn't 100% correct unfortunately. We were camping next to the Khubedu river after summiting Mount Aux Sources. Between 8-9pm I heard movement outside our tents and asked if anyone was outside, nobody answered, but everyone was awake by then. We still heard movement outside and said we were armed and aware that there are people around. We heard some whispering and it sounded like people running away. We stayed in our tents and started putting on lights and arming ourselves with pepper spray or walking sticks. A person started hitting us through one of the tents, it seemed like they were trying to get into the tent. We saw the next next morning that there was already a cut around 15cm at one corner, so maybe they were trying to tear it open? We tried to hit back and called to one of the women in another tent to shoot. (She had a gas pistol.) After this they ran away. We sent out an SOS through Garmin Inreach. Our contact person called Mountain Rescue and Garmin also contacted Mountain Rescue. Everyone was REALLY helpful and tried to help. The closest people were at Tugela and they advised that we try to get back to Tugela. We packed up around 12am and walked back. We were too rattled to continue.
Very disappointed as it was day 1 of our Traverse, but hopefully we can try again in the future!

I’m sorry your group were subjected to this harrowing experience and trauma.

From the coordinates provided this happened in the upper Bilanjil valley, southeast of the Crow’s Nest – Mont-Aux-Sources ridge, and 1 km south of Crow’s Nest Cave. Of concern is that this area has been regarded as safe, away from the hotspot around the Tugela Falls.

I’m curious about what was reported in the news article. Since by Elri’s first hand account there was no accident/injury or rescue involved this is not strictly a Dragon’s Wrath incident, but more a Berg Alert topic report.

I'll check to see if something was put on Berg Alert, otherwise I will post there as well.

@ Tony. That is worrying.  However, I guess that it is that much closer to the GT route.  If they were on the ridge of Mt Aux, they can see right onto that spot where Elri and her friends were camping.  The area that I deem 'safe', is right on the edge and people would have to go out of their way to see if there were any 'pickings'.  However I am usually there only for the photography, and am not on well used route.
