Berg Alert 2026

Berg Alert 2026 was created by intrepid
This is the place for all updates, incidents and observations relating to security issues in the Drakensberg in 2026.

The kind of thing which should be reported here:
* new incidents of theft, mugging or any kind of verbal or physical intimidation (whether it is experienced first-hand, seen in the media, or heard through the grape vine).
* new observations of the activities of shepherds, smugglers and other parties, especially as it concerns the safety of visitors to the Berg.

The purpose of this thread is to maintain a true picture of what is happening in the Berg, to keep a concerned Berg community informed, and to create a healthy awareness of security issues which will help others avoid problems. It is not the intention to create a media hype or undue negative publicity for the Berg, nor to harm tourism the area, and definitely not to create prejudice against the Basotho and other locals living in the area. The traits that lead to crime and other security- related incidents in the Berg are traits that are common to human nature in general and are not tied to a specific culture or nation.

We advise visitors to the Berg to take the security issues seriously - but rather than being alarmed and avoiding going there, we want people to be informed on what the issues are exactly and how they occur - and to make decisions accordingly. We want people to keep hiking in the Berg.

We also encourage people to appreciate the cultures of the local people that can be encountered in the Berg and even to learn some local words and phrases. Wherever possible let your encounters with the locals be friendly and interactive. Many encounters can be very rewarding. If you do find yourself in a tense situation, do your utmost to maintain respect and stay calm.  Some helpful notes on Basotho culture have been written for hikers and travellers  .

For a complete list of historical Berg Alert threads running since 2008, please see  this link .

Known, relevant issues during recent years:

Injisuthi: Sadly the Injisuthi escarpment is now featured on this list because of 2 incidents in 2024. Problems have occurred in the past, but going back a fairly long time, so this could be considered a "new" trend. Gear was stolen during the night from a group of hikers camping in tents inside Upper Injisuthi Cave. Rocks were also hurled by shepherds at a group of hikers descending Leslies Pass. Interactions with locals in this area might be strange or somewhat intimidating in nature as has also been reported. Caution is advised if you are hiking there.

Road to Injisuthi: Youths on the side of the road may beg for handouts. Road blockages may sometimes be set up in order to compel motorists to stop, at which they may be harassed for handouts. This seems to occur particularly at the cattle grid. These are long standing issues which are ongoing. Incidents were reported in 2022. We are not certain if anything happened 2023-2024. There have been reports of stones being thrown at cars when handouts are not received.

Mzimude / Walker's Peak area: A very serious incident occurred in 2023 in which two hikers on a Grand Traverse were brutally attacked and robbed of some gear. The incident occurred during the day while they were hiking, whereas many previous incidents of this nature have happened at night. This is the first security incident in this part of the Berg, that we are aware of, since the start of Berg Alert in 2008.

Amphitheatre and Khubedu Valley: Raiding of tents at the Tugela Falls and surrounds in an old issue which is ongoing. Intimidation for handouts also occurs in the area, including the Chain Ladders, which has been known to result in stone-throwing. There was a nasty incident in the Khubedu Valley during 2016 which received a lot of publicity - the details of this incident can be read on  this thread  .

Mbundini area: Madonna Pass area, the last reported incident was in 2018. Let's hope this trend is now gone!

Rhino Peak / Mashai Pass / Bollard Pass: Periodically we hear reports of intimidation and rock throwing by shepherds. The most recent incident was reported in 2021.

Giants Pass (Giants Castle): In 2021 a group was chased from their tents by gunshot and their tents were raided. This area went through a troubling period between ~2004-2008 and had been relatively quiet until this recent incident.

Note that for 2026, certain advisories were taken off the above list since time had passed. It reflects that trends and hotspots in the Berg tend to change. While it was good to be able remove things from the list, the serious incidents which have occurred relatively recently in the Southern Berg and at Injisuthi are a sobering reminder that these continue to happen in the Berg, even if the incidence rate is lower than in other areas of the country.

For more information read through  General Security Precautions  , and also read  this post  on the security issues around the Amphitheatre as well as the Mbundini area - included is a map indicating where the problems are occurring.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Hi. I mostly copied my post from Dragon's Wrath as it is more applicable here. We started the Drakensberg Grand Traverse on 7 February. The first night we were camping next to the Khubedu river after summiting Mount Aux Sources. Between 8-9pm I heard movement outside our tents and asked if anyone was outside, nobody answered, but everyone was awake by then. We still heard movement outside and said we were armed and aware that there are people around. We heard some whispering and it sounded like people running away. We stayed in our tents and started putting on lights and arming ourselves with pepper spray or walking sticks. A person started hitting us through one of the tents, it seemed like they were trying to get into the tent. We saw the next next morning that there was already a cut around 15cm at one corner, so maybe they were trying to tear it open? We tried to hit back and called to one of the women in another tent to shoot. (She had a gas pistol.) After this they ran away. We sent out an SOS through Garmin Inreach. Our contact person called Mountain Rescue and Garmin also contacted Mountain Rescue. Everyone was REALLY helpful and tried to help. The closest people were at Tugela and they advised that we try to get back to Tugela. We packed up around 12am and walked back. We were too rattled to continue, but hopefully we can try again in the future!

So sorry to hear about your experience. We too had been intimidated by a group of herdsmen in the same area on Friday, 13 Feb. The night before I heard footsteps outside the hut at Tugela, where we camped due to bad weather. As we walked through the valley just below Mt Aux Sources, a group of 4plus hersmen started calling at us from a nearby hill, and 2 other ran towards us from their huts on the hill next to the hill where the 4 shouters were sitting. The one man asked for food, meat etc from my guide whilst the other man just stared at me, not with anger or hatred, but an intent that would send any woman running. The non staring 1 also wanted to know which way we are going, so my guide lied about this and we opted for another route to Madonna. We were also very scared that they might be armed with guns, as the number and sizes of the herds and huts have grown significantly. We encounted another herdsmen near Madonna and gave him a banana to have him leave us alone, although his demeanor was more friendly. Needless to say i was terrified of our return as we would encounted them again. I prayed the whole hike for safety. Upon our return we spotted 3, thankfully missed rolled in and i could hear their voices but they didnt find us.
yesterday i asked fellow campers at the falls if they had any encounters, and it seems that there were 2 groups at the ladders, 5 and 9 herdsmen.
I also logged this with Witsieshoek who will discuss this at the next sanpark meeting.
Personally i believe something really bad is going to happen there soon. And only government, both sides can deal with this. Being armed and using force will escalate this into unthinkable violence and make this area, and others basically impossible to hike.
i wont go back until this is resolved, it was a terrifying hike scanning the hills like a scout every step of the way.

Sorry to hear Riana. Hopefully the issue can be resolved soon. I called and emailed Ezemvelo and we informed Witsieshoek. Hopefully the problem gets solved and not worse.

Herewith Witsieshoek's reply:Hi Riana,Thank you again for taking the time to speak with me. We appreciate the constructive way in which you’ve approached this. As discussed, following the two recent weekends where hikers experienced uncomfortable interactions near Mont-aux-Sources, we have activated the following measures:* Coordinated with the relevant officials who have the capacity to put visible patrols in place. This involves the South African Police Service (SAPS), the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.* Engaged with the SA officer on the Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Security Cluster, who will ask for liaison directly with community leadership on the Lesotho side to address concerns. This integrated, multi-agency approach has been used in previous summer grazing seasons and has proven effective in reducing friction and managing higher-interaction zones. In addition, we are formalising written seasonal camping guidance for hikers. During peak grazing months (typically summer), there is increased cattle presence near Mont-aux-Sources, which results in a higher concentration of herders in that area. We will be advising hikers to consider alternative escarpment campsites such as Tugela Falls, Bilanjil Falls, or Ribbon Falls, and to avoid highly isolated camping near Mont-aux-Sources during this period. The escarpment is communal grazing land, and seasonal herder presence is a long-standing pattern. What we are currently seeing appears to be an increase in contact frequency due to higher numbers of both animals, and their attendant herders, and hikers in the area, rather than a behavioural shift. We appreciate you raising the matter and helping ensure that hikers can make informed decisions about campsite selection during the summer season.

Very sad how this is downplayed by the authorities with "appears to be an increase in contact frequency". If it was simply contact with both parties being decent towards one another, then it would not be a problem. When people start damaging others property with the intent to steal or worse, then I believe that this needs to be handled, and Ezemvelo, as usual, are sitting around with their heads buried in the sand.

@Peter Good 'contact' can make a gr8 trip more interesting.  I dont belive in most cases of intimidation, it is because hikers chased cattle or horses etc.  If they see hikers as an easy as a way of scoring becuse they are bored or hungry that is not anything the hikers have caused, even with the occassional sweet swop for selfies.  The entire area around chain ladders, Tugela Falls etc is in South Africa.  Perhaps the SANDF army should start patrolling the area, making their presence felt and getting some high altitude skills.  Not sure I have any immediate solution to the problem besides not hiking to those areas during this time of the year.  Which is a shame!
