Trail Sleeping Bags

A few weeks ago Mr Price Sport afforded me the opportunity to test their Trail range of sleeping bags for them.

They currently have 3 bags rated zero or sub-zero:
Senior Cowl -5°C / 1.63kg / R300
Trail Tech Cowl 0°C / +-1kg / R500 (this one has a print error on the sack which states its -5°C, the swingtag has the correct info)
Trail Tech Cowl -8°C / +-1.7kg / R600

I was given the -5°C Senior Cowl to test.

Its first test was in my garden in 15°C Durban weather just to make sure it was decent, it easily passed test no.1 with me overheating in a couple minutes.

I then nervously planned my hike with Jon to spend 1 night in the lower berg and 1 night on the escarpment.
As mentioned in the hike report by Jon, night 1 was spent in tents just past Pillar Caves, it dropped to around 2.5°C, I slept in only thermals and was perfectly warm, I don't remember feeling cold at any stage.
I was now more confident about the 2nd night!
In tents behind Rhino Peak it dropped to at least -5°C, the coldest I saw inside my tent was -2.1°C, again the bag kept me perfectly warm! This time I had my thermals & a fleece on, I wanted to test it without the fleece but I couldn't bring myself to stick any body parts outside the bag, just sticking my hand out to check the time & temperature was bad enough!

Overall I was super impressed with this sleeping bag, value for money is unbelievable!
I can't really find any differences when comparing it to my Deuter -5°C , except that it weighs 170g less than my Deuter.

The only minor faults I can find are not really with the bag itself:
- The outer cover/sack does not have one of those circular pieces that fits under the drawstring to prevent water getting in
- The weight of the bags are not listed anywhere, Mr Price Sport have said they will include this info on future production runs
- It does not have a valuables pouch, not that I use those anyway. For R300 I wouldn't expect one anyway, the 0°C and -8 degree Trail Tech bags have valuables pouches

Based on this we've recommended the bags to a couple friends, will update how that goes. I'm very tempted to get myself the lighter 0°C bag if it performs as well as the one I tested.

Fitness, I know you also wanted to test a Trail bag, gimme a shout if you're interested in using this one B)

Thanks for the review. Very impressive for the price, even more so if I correctly interpret from JonWells Mashai Pass trip write up and photos that you were alone in a two man tent.

Yup, and just on a foam mat. I had 2 emergency blankets in my pack just in case!

Since this is an old thread, have anyone lately been using these sleeping bags? Will they be sufficient for novice hikers? Me & my wife need to kit ourselves out for an upcoming hiking trip (October),do I need to spend a fortune now on bags or will these Trail sleeping bags be fine starters?

Went past Mr Price Sport today to check out the bag (-5degree Snr Cowl), but it looked quite bulky compared to the 0degree Snr Ultralight? The Snr Ultralight looked more compact and would fit nicely in a backpack?

I use that trail-light bag as my summer bag. Good value, lightish at 1kg and covers a broad range of temps.
I've only experienced mid to high single figure temps in it so have never tested it closer to zero.

Some of the guys on VE have the Trail -8 bag and have been quite happy with it during winter.

Hi.
I have recently bought some second hand trail sleeping bags for a dirt cheap price. Anyone used this brand before in colder temperatures? (I think it's a MR Price brand) The ones I got were rated for -5 degrees C. I haven't tested them out yet, but do you think they can be trusted for use in colder temperatures around 0 degrees and a little lower? I have bought these try use in the interim while saving up for a good quality bag.
