Mt. Inhlosane - KZN Midlands

A nice steep little hike I found to do in the KZN Midlands (not sure whether this falls under Drak Hiking?)

Start from Everglades Hotel near Dargle. You pay R10 at reception for the hike (free if you are staying over there)

Altitude from 1570m at car park to 1977m on top. Distance is only 2.2km one way
The first 900m are spent walking along a tractor path through trees before you get into the open hillside.

My wife & I took about 70 mins up and 40 mins down. It was really windy at the top, we ended up spending most of the time up there behind a rock. It was also quite dusty & smokey so the views were not great

View from the hotel

After the 900m through the trees

Entering the rock band

View towards the berg

View towards the Indian Ocean

And for good measure a pic from last year's snowfall

Thanks for the info. Thats definitely a hike I want to do in summer when the air should be cleaner. I have done Swaartkop 3 times, the first time we couldn't even see Midmar (which is only about 3km away), the second time we could clearly see Monk's Cowl, the third time we could vaguely see Giant's Castle. Comes down to good timing I guess. On a clear day that should have a killer view.

The view looking at Inhlosane from the top of the Swaartkop (with Giant's in the background - excuse the lack of clarity, it was taken on my old cheap camera) is as follows:

Now imagine a similar view from closer to the Berg and higher up, should be really good...

Just out of curiosity,

Would Mt. Inhlosane be covered in snow? i suppose it will. and will we be able to get there tomorrow for a little walk in it?

I'm thinking of doing something snow wise tomorrow, perhaps even get to use my skis for the first time ever.

It should be at the moment and it will probably still have a bit of snow on the south facing sides tomorrow, but who-knows how much and whether or not the other slopes will have any tomorrow...

My 800th post  I clearly spend way too much time on this site

Pretty sure there will still be plenty around. The area definitely got a decent snow dump yesterday

Enjoy, and let us know how it was

FYI, don't go the R617 way (Underberg rd) take the Howick north turnoff & head towards Dargle. The last 9km are good condition dirt roads.

And do yourself a favour & stop to check out the Mandela capture site, the new metal "statue" they unveiled on Saturday is amazing. Sunday was the 50th anniversary which is when we stopped there

Inhlosane and its whole ridge are still covered in snow and will probably be for a few days at least. Its so prominent now being the 1st snow you can see coming up from Durban
