Apa Sherpa reached the summit of Mount Everest for the nineteenth time on May 21, 2009.
Apa Sherpa, the Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer who broke his own record by reaching the summit of Mount Everest for the nineteenth time on May 21, 2009, certainly has rightfully earned his nickname "Super Sherpa". Apa was a member of the Eco Everest Expedition, raising awareness about climate change. The team carried down five tonnes of mountain trash, some of which included parts of a crashed helicopter. Although Apa may make such a feat sound easy, a grave reminder that Everest is not for the faint of heart was the loss of fellow Sherpa, Lhakpa Nuru, who tragically died on this expedition in an avalanche.
