The Maloti-Drakensberg trans-frontier area was one of the special areas listed for investment and development, starting 2010, at a recent conference held under the Boundless Southern Africa banner involving several countries within the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC).

The seven Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCAs) which were earmarked are Ai Ais-Richtersveld, Great Limpopo, Kgalagadi, Kavango-Zambezi, Limpopo-Shashe, Lubombo and Maloti-Drakensberg.

Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Martinis van Schalkwyk, addressed the hindrances to development in this area and said that the 2010 Soccer World Cup will be used to launch the drive.

A more detailed media release is available on the South African Government Information website, as well as that of the Department of Environmental and Tourism affairs. Click here to read it.

Increased investment and tourism is undoubtedly needed for the area, but with it comes a dread of too much development, pollution, abuse and over-crowding.

It is generally true that hikers and climbers have a concern for protecting the mountains they enjoy so much, and now more than ever it is time that we unite in these matters and become a voice that is heard! It is hoped that this website would play a role in facilitating this.

May the Berg be kept wild and free!
