Where Is This? was created by Richard Hunt
Hi Guys.
My son in law sent me this platinum framed print photo, 110 years old. Under the print it has "Government Game Reserve, Giants Castle" written on it. I have looked at the map and struggling to locate the place this photo was taken. Maybe someone recognizes this location...who is more intimate with the Giants Castle Park than I am????

Looks a bit like the Lotheni area to me. The prominent buttress in the middle of the photo looks like the one that Redi Pass goes up. This would mean that Buttress Pass goes up behind it and the cutback on the lefthand side would be the Hlatimba Passess. If I am correct, then the obvious way up just to the right of the prominent buttress would be Ka-Masihlenga / Uklebe Pass and the peak on the far right would be Tent.
Just a guess, based on a first look!

Thanks for uploading the photo Richard.
The original reserve, as set out in 1891, included the watershed of the Loteni River. Giants, as we know it today, is a lot smaller.

@Biomech & @tiska Yes I think you are correct, this is the Lotheni area. From Hlathimba Pass cutback/Buttress on the left to the Tent on the right of the photo. This whole area must have been known as Giants Castle Reserve 110 years ago. Thanks for your input

Its a view of Langies to Bannermans pass. Probably taken from Middle ridge. The highest point is the side of Bannermans face, on the left is Bond. The Thumb, the small point, left of center. I'll see if I can find a photo

Incidentally I uploaded this photo in the cellphone category for 2018 pictures. The view from where it was taken, North of Langies Ridge, gives a wider angle of the escarpment; all the way to Popple. My photo, taken from Langies Ridge itself, only give a view up to the side of Bannermans face

That might make more sense from the Giant's Castle perspective.

It is Erskine Peak to Judge Pass at Giants Castle. No question at all - I have hiked far too much in that stretch of Berg to have any doubt
As to where it was taken from, the angle is wrong for Middle Ridge - which is south of Langies Ridge, and Langies Ridge is visible on the left of the shot. It is further back than the camp, so I'm guessing from Oribi Ridge. I have done Oribi Ridge 3 times, but all were in the mist, so I'm not entirely sure of that part. But no question on what section of the escarpment that is.

A photo of the same section of escarpment (Erskine to Judge) taken from Oribi Ridge in June 2013.
Not quite the same angle as Richard's photo, and mine also seems to be taken from a lower elevation. I would guess Richard's photo is taken from the top of one of the hills near Oribi Ridge.

Thanks guys...now I see!!!! Finally the puzzle is solved. This print is apparently a platinum print and not done in the normal way with silver. It is a very valuable piece of Africana Malumi, so I have been told. Now I can tell my son in law with confidence.
HAPPY HIKING
