Voitec, in addition to the already mentioned links, you can compliment the data with the waypoints from the caves, passes and top Khulus downloads.

We were in the Giant's area at the end of April this year (2009). Started from Giant's Castle Main Camp, up Giant's Castle pass, camped on top of the Giant, and down the same pass and back again.
We only saw one Sotho herdsman with his flock on top of the escarpment - otherwise it was very quiet. I can't find any hiker-related security incidents in the area since 2007.
This seems to the case for the whole Natal Drakensberg, as far as I know?

I have not heard of any recent security incidents involving hikers, in this area and across the uKhahlamba Drakensberg. But you can bet your bottom dollar that lots of hiking equipment has been stolen since 2007 at the Tugela Falls - this problem continues unchecked and the news of fresh incidents rarely makes it to the broader public. Every time I'm up there I approach people that have been camping and ask them if they've had visitors at night. More often than not, they say YES. It so happened that when I was last there in January this year, I did not pick up on any incidents around that time.
Now that I think of it, I don’t think I ever reported that in September 2008 I was part of a group that witnessed hearing gunshots (and later lots of shouting) by, presumably, smugglers heading up Ships Prow South Fork, as we were heading up the North Fork. It was not clear what was going on exactly, and whether the shots were aimed at us or not. We didn't feel threatened, continued on, and had no further issues.
It is extremely difficult to get information about these incidents. Not every incident is reported to the authorities, and even when it does get reported, it does not always get mentioned to the broader public. The high level bureaucracy surrounding this is very unhelpful and frustrating to those who are trying to deal with the problems first hand, and for us hikers who are out there and have to constantly be on our guard.
The conflicts relating to cattle rustling and smuggling continue. Shoot-outs occur regularly between different smuggling parties, local contacts at the bottom and the authorities. Some smugglers were shot dead this year.
I appeal to everyone reading this to post information on any incident they know of, and to encourage others also to do so. Keeping the lid on what is going on out there is to no-one’s benefit.

Hi There
Any recent issues in the Langalibalele Pass and Bannermans Pass area?
We have a fairly large group (10-12) that are going to attempting Langalibalele Pass in early August, ideally we would like to spend the night on top or near the top so we can enjoy the view the next morning. We will be tenting
How far is Langalibalele Pass and Bannermans Pass from each other?
thanks G

There haven't been any reports of security issues in a while.
The distance between them isn't the problem, the presence of a large ridge between them is more of the issue! Bannerman Cave is great (although far from water), but also plenty of camping between the two.
Make sure you know how to find the one from the other, and how to get over the ridge - it isn't obvious if you don't know the area. A gps will help, especially in mist.

@Gazastone out of interest the hiking distance between the 2 passes is approximately 4km
We were there a few weeks ago, only saw 2 shepherds in the region and had no problems with them.

Hi
While I have done a lot of hiking in the Berg I no longer live full time in South Africa and so would appreciate any feedback on the present security situation for the following hike
Dates: May 2018
Route: Giants Castle - Giants Ridge - Contour Path - Langalibalele Pass - Lesotho - Bannerman Pass - Giants Castle
Group: 2 adults, 2 young children.
When I last visited the Berg in 2016 there were various security concerns in these areas.
Updates on the current situation would be appreciated.
With thanks
Paul

Hi Paul
We did the Bannerman pass Langies loop over the Easter weekend. Second night we tented about 500m from Langies pass. We were a group of 4.
Another group did the same route as we did.
No problems at all. Only saw one shepard. Conditions were misty and wet.
Cheers

Hi Paul,
I went up Jarding and down Bannerman a month ago. There were many shepherds on top - all very friendly, I was solo, and all the shepherds asked about this, but I never felt vulnerable. Take the necessary precautions if you plan on camping on top. There haven't been problems for several years, as far as I recall.
Also, given your route, just bear in mind (in case you don't know) that Giant's Hut is in a state of disrepair.

Thanks for the updates. Seems the Giants area is once again good.
I was surprised to see a post that suggested that hikers were under risk of attack in the Bannerman Pass area. - the few Basuto that I encountered in the past on the top of the escarpment were always friendly.
There is always the risk anywhere in Africa that someone will steal things off you overnight given what they see as an opportunity - but this is easily countered. However attacks on hikers would be an entirely different level of escalation.
