Alternative accommodation at Sani Top

It may not be generally known that there is an alternative to the Sani Mountain Lodge (formally Sani Top Chalet).

It is called ‘Sani Stone Lodge’ and is about 8kms from the SA/Lesotho border on the Mokhotlong road. The Lodge overlooks the Sani River, where I am told there is excellent trout fishing.

‘Sani Stone Lodge’ is run by Ntate Phoka Nthoki. In the backpackers section, he has accommodation for 7 in a comfortable dormitory plus 2 double en-suite rooms. 4 of the beds in the dormitory are big enough for two ‘partners’ each! There is also a kitchen and lounge as well as communal toilets.

Self catering backpackers accommodation is R150.00 per person per night and the double en-suite rooms are R200.00 per person per night. Meals can be provided on request.

Four en-suite rondavels, a restaurant and lounge are still under construction.

Comms are patchy but he will reply.

Apart from the great hiking in the area, he can also organise a pony trek, or a pony supported trip along the Drakensberg Escarpment between Sani Top and Sehlabathebe, and Sani Top and Giants Castle, including Thabana Ntlenyana.

I've stayed in the backpackers dormitory twice now, and it is rustic but comfortable. The restaurant and bar which is up and running, is probably the most surprising of all - one definitely doesn't expect to see something so fancy in the middle of nowhere!
