Cellphone comms in Lesotho

24 Aug 2018 17:30 #73863 by Papa Dragon
Hi guys

Any advice on cellphone comms in Lesotho? Basically want Whatsapp comms, and the ability to make an emergency call if necessary.
Route from Fouriesburg to Sani Top on the Highlands Route. Approx 4-5 days.

Phoned my service provider, and apparently my current contract does not support roaming.

Looking for economy and ease of use, even once off use is fine.

Cheers
Papa D

You should be able to get roaming with any prepaid SIM. Rather go for Vodacom or MTN.

Here is the Vodacom info:

And MTN:

In my experience, one can connect to transmitters in KZN at some parts of the escarpment. It is very location specific and walking 50m one way or the other can make, or loose, the connection. If on or near the escarpment, connection to any Lesotho transmitter is very unlikely.

I stayed in Lesotho last year, and worked in the field most of the time. For data go for Vodacom. It is half the price of SA and faster, I could whatsapp call from almost anywhere. The 2 gig for R149 is a good deal.
If the power is off(which happens frequently) though data usually stops as well.

I used an econet (mtn) SIM and phone with a 2 week battery life (R200) for calling.

If you buy airtime at pep stores you can buy any amount you want and enter it once. At the small shops the best you often get is R10 scratch cards. Which keep you busy for some time if you want to load a R149 data voucher

Some feedback: before the trip, i bought a Vodacom SA sim card... which I loaded with airtime.
I phoned Vodacom SA, and got roaming activated.

When we arrived at Caledonspoort border post, I had R165 of airtime, and 2.25 GB data on the phone.
I used the phone on the first 2 days, for a couple of Whatsapps, and probably 2 SMS..

On the second evening, I could no longer send Wahatsapps despite there being data signal,
I discovered that the Whatsapp and SMS had been using up the airtime (R165), and that all the data was still there.
For some reason, I couldn't get the phone to use the data for Whatsapp or internet.

I bought a Vodacom Lesotho sim card, M3.00, and M50.00 Airtime, which i used to buy 1gb of data.
As a new customer, VCL gave me another GB, which was far too much for the rest if the trip.

Anyway, buying the VCL sim and airtime there is the way to go..
