Connections is about establishing relationships between you and other people on this site. This helps with networking and also forms a personal address book which will help in sending a PM or email to your friends through the site. The concept is similar to having friends on Facebook.
To establish a connection with another member, you need to view his/her profile (which of course you need to login for) by selecting it from their avatar (if they have posted anything on the forums), or from the Member List on the User Menu. While viewing the profile, select "Connections" from the menu directly above, followed by "Request Connection".
You may enter a personalised message in the box that appears and then click Submit. The person will be notified of your connection request via email. The next time they login to the site they will also be presented with a Connection Request icon below their usual profile picture above the User Menu.
They can choose to accept or reject, and until they do, their status will be one of "Acceptance pending" on your connection list. You will be informed of their choice via email.
Once a connection is established you can specify your relationship, e.g. "Friend", "Fellow Hiker" (more options can be added on request). View your connections by selecting "Connections" in the User Menu, or in the menu directly above your profile page, or in the tab directly below your profile picture. From there you can send them an email (through the site) or a PM.
When writing a new PM directly from your inbox, your connections are conveniently displayed in a quick-list to choose from.
