Where do I find stuff on this site? was created by intrepid
If you've asked that question I'd like to hear from you.
I want to make it quicker and easier to find information on this site, particularly the popular stuff. If you've struggled locating things and if you have suggestions on how to make this easier, please respond here with specifics. Some changes I can implement quickly, others will be considered for the next major site overhaul (which may be due in 10-12 months time).
You may have noticed the quick links to some popular pages and resources at the bottom of every page. One of these is "Info on Berg Passes" which is a quick link to the list of Berg passes, which in turn links to more info and pics of each pass. This collection of quick-links will be expanded in the near future.

Finding something you've read in the past is easy if you know the tread topic, then the simple search tab option is easy. It is only a problem once you need to search for a specific post of which you can't remember the topic. I see no easy solution for this and don't think it is a problem. The site is already the best source of info regarding pretty much everything involved with hiking, but especially pertaining to the Berg. Well done Chris!
What I think can be a great addition to the site is a common place where all can collaborate and contribute to important info. Lets say, GPS co-ordinates for all the caves. I have not seen any site/s that has all listed. If there is a list where members can help build and complete missing info in this regard it would be great. No single one have all the info, but between the members there would probably be no "grey" or "unknown" inch of the Berg.
I can even see it becoming a "info hunt" that would inspire members to explore and log the needed Way-point or getting that missing picture of a particular cave.
This list can be the same format as "Info on Berg Passes" with pics and links to Blogs, but with the difference of being editable by members. Members can then fill in missing co-ordinates or change the security status of caves.
This can be done to update and complete the Passes list as well and has the advantage that everything doesn't then come down on you Chris.

Boerkie, we are going to give you an award for being the top idea punter on VE!
A list of caves similar to the existing list of passes is in the making, started it a while ago but it'll take a little more time before I'll publish it.
The idea of a page being editable by all members is the core aspect of a wiki. So the newly published Maloti-Drakensberg Wiki was launched with that in mind.
As for certain blogs/articles on this site being open for all to edit, that is ideal. Attention is certainly being given to Access Control Lists (ACL) in the development of Joomla (the content management system this site runs on). In practical terms this can means it becomes easier to assign customised permissions to a group of users to a certain article. I think is already part of the newer versions of Joomla and would certainly then be easy to implement with VE's next major site overhaul.

I'd like to have the Google search option. Either make search into a drop down offering the 2 choices or add another tab at the top for a Google searchintrepid wrote:
There is a thread called " Where do I find stuff on this site " where we attempted to address the issue of where to find stuff on this site. The inbuilt search function is not the greatest, and often Google does a way better job of presenting your sites own search results, which is why many sites have integrated Google's search as their own. Question: how do people look for stuff on VE, and would people prefer having Google's results integrated into VE? In the new version of the site we will be adding many more "Quick Links" into the grey box at the bottom of each page to help people access popular pages easier, just as a matter of information. Any further feedback and suggestions on this, please post it in the above-mentioned thread.Smurfatefrog wrote: Easier to search the site using Google www.google.co.za/search?as_sitesearch=forum.dstv.com&q=andre#q=andre+site:http:%2F%2Fwww.vertical-endeavour.com

I have implemented Google Custom Search for VE. For those that are keen on trying it, it can be found on the search page:
www.vertical-endeavour.com/search.html
This page can be accessed by through the Search link in the footer of each page. It will show you two search boxes: Google first, followed by the sites own search engine.
It will also appear in the search result which you get by using the search box at the top, right (the initial result will still be the sites own result, but then you will see the Google search box).
Please let me know how useful and accurate it is as this will be determine how it may be implemented further.
