I've heard more than report that Breedtsnek Pass near Maanhaarrand in the Magaliesberg is in a really rough state currently. Normal cars cannot drive it right now. Does anyone have any further info or pics? Can it be done with a 4x4?

Intrepid

There is one bad patch of road at the top of the hill that requires a high vehicle. If you drive carefully it can be done in 2 X 4 but otherwise 4 X 4 is required. the bad section is about 100m long and full of axle twisters. I will post a pic on Monday, probably heading up there on Sunday.

Hi Intrepid

I've attached photos from the last time I went over the pass (10 Dec 2011). The road was in the worst condition I've seen it in the last 10 years. We did the pass in a GelandeWagen which managed fine, however a month prior to this we did the pass in a 4WD X-trail which battled at the top but made it over. Over that month the pass had deteriorated probably due to the summer rains. The top of the pass is all bare bed rock at the moment with a few small rock steps.

I think a 2WD bakkie with high ground clearance and a diff lock should be able to handle it but I think you might risk damaging a 4WD SUV.

I have done it many times over the last 3 months - last time a about 10 days ago. It is the worst I have seen it. I have done it in a Subaru Forrester and more often in a L/Cruiser. just go slow an pick your line and I thin any high clearance wagon will do it. Alternatively an Avis or Europcar will fly over.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Luckily I live on the right side of the mountain and seldom use the pass, though it does come up in conversation periodically because it is a useful route to MSP and Cederberg/Tonquani if you are travelling from parts of Joburg. I hope for your sake they keep it maintained!
