There was quite an epic rescue mission in the Magaliesberg over the weekend. Still trying to find out where exactly it happened.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

This happened halfway up Rustenburg Kloof. The man was trapped by a rock in a cave in such a precarious place, it took a police helicopter to take close up photos whilst hovering on the side of the mountain to locate him. A team member then got roped down and was guided by ORRU, who had binoculars, to the cave. It was extremely difficult, and we don't know how he got to this point other than being under the influence of something and not realizing how dangerous his expedition was. His first version was he ran from a snake and later he said, he was at the waterfall and a hand came up over his face and the next thing he was stuck in a rock 50m to the true right of the waterfall on a sheer cliff!!!

I'm sorry to hear about the man's ordeal, and the subsequent ordeal the rescue teams and doctors had to go through to get this sorted. The poor man lost his foot in the process. Yes, I am of opinion that it was gross negligence on his side. A classic example in fact, with all the typical dire consequences for his own life and that of the rescuers.

Kudos to Sabine, and I'm sure other VE members who were involved in the rescue. Was at Lonmin yesterday where the guys spoke at length about this, describing the MCSA climbers as 'rock stars' (pun intended I believe).

Well done guys. Can't figure out-was he trapped inside the cave? Seems like a miracle that he was even found (or were there other people with him when it happened?) There are a lot of people hiking up there and to the top of the "glyklip" to collect holy water.
Glad he could be saved.
