Flash floods

You hear about them, you rarely see them, but they happen:



I've been on two different rivers where the level rose a metre in under 5 minutes here in the Western Cape. Steep mountains with a big catchment - scary stuff. I've had a friend standing in a dry river bed when it came down like a wall I am told...about 800mm high, but still plenty to knock you down. And a chap in Columbia was sleeping on a ledge several metres up from the river when the river rose super fast. Mark died that day, his mate made it:

Anyone had any experience with flash floods?

That's a pretty scary and spectacular spot.

What happened at Ship's Prow?

No idea to the background but looks like it could have been worse

Some hikers were killed when the river flooded. I can't find any reference to it on the net now,
and I know there was some speculation as to whether they were walking or camped at the time.
Maybe someone will find a link and post it..

Jeepers that is bone chilling. A truly horrible story.

Really sobering....

At the risk of repetition for those who have been on here for a while, this is what the final gully of Ifidi Pass does in a summer storm... bone dry to waterfalls cascading down the side-walls in just 10 minutes!

Reminds me of the story on the Hilton Pass thread, where the team was forced to bivy below the 3rd pitch in a narrow gully. I seem to recall along the lines of "if it rained, we probably would have died".
