Outdoor Research Trailbreaker Tour Pants (Size Large) in Excellent condition: R1,750
I have some winter, soft-shell snow-hiking pants that I'm not likely to use. I received them secondhand as part of a clothing bundle I purchased, They appear new, without tags (no wear or stains) They have removable internal gaiters. The use cases would be for alpine hiking, and skiing. They are size large--with an internal velcro waist adjustment system that makes them suitable for 32 to 36 inch waists. They have a 32.5 inch inseam. They are ventilated pants, with zips from the knee to the waist to dump heat, if needed. They are USD$249 new.
I think they would be great for charging up Berg passes, choked with snow and ice.
Here is blurb from the manufacturer:
The Outdoor Research Trailbreaker Tour Pant is designed to keep pace with high-energy pursuits in the mountains, offering a perfect blend of breathability and protection. Crafted with a softshell upper that stretches with every move, these pants provide exceptional freedom of movement and air permeability to keep you cool during strenuous ascents. The lower legs are fortified with a waterproof Pertex Shield to fend off snow and moisture, ensuring your legs stay dry even when plowing through fresh powder or spring slush.

I’m selling my Lanshan 1 pro.
Price: R3000
Location: PTA / Centurion, willing to ship at buyers C&R. Collection preferred.
It’s the 4-season Khaki version.
Condition: Excellent. The tent itself is still perfect. It’s also been seam sealed quite well if I have to say so myself. The tent pegs have been changed out a bit but are still mostly original.I’ll also include three carbon-fibre arrows that I use to increase the internal space in the tent when hiking. As well as a custom tyvek groundsheet that I had made for the tent.
Total use is ± 10 days on trail.
3fulgear.com/product/ultralight-tent/lanshan-1-pro/3F UL GEAR Lanshan 1 pro is a hybrid shelter that blends tarp and tent qualities into a simple, versatile super light shelter. This is the update version built for experienced ultralight hiker. Lanshan 1 Pro is a single wall tent, if you need double...It’s a great ultralight trekking pole tent.
Absolutely bomb-proof against the worst winds.
Reason for selling: Trying out different tents.

For sale: Jim Green African Ranger Barefoot Boots, Houston Brown. Size 11. R2000
These boots are barely used (couple of days of office use) and given how they are built they are like new. I'm selling because they are simply too large for me.

Location: Pretoria / Centurion
Kind regards,

Hi
I'm looking for a lightweight sleeping bag with a comfort rating around -12C or so. Hoping for a traverse in early June, but I'm really no good in the cold. Tia. Meg

Hi Meg,
The daytime temperatures in the berg during winter is normally not too cold, but the nights can get chilly. In fact, I've had it so warm that I couldn't walk with my long sleeve shirt, it was too hot! But don't bargain on this though, rather plan for colder weather and be pleasantly surprised if it is warmer.
What is your definition of a "lightweight" sleeping bag? It would help if you could specify the mass.
The FA Ice Breaker is typically good enough for most berg winter nights, and at around 1.5kg or so it is sort of medium weight. I have a long one (brand new) if you are interested. You'll find lighter bags if you start looking at overseas brands. I have a Nanga (japanese) bag that fits my 1,97m frame comfortably, weighs 869g and is comfort rated to -12 Deg C. Not cheap but worth it for me as I use it often.
While having the correct bag is important, there are other ways you can employ to sleep warmer at night. Consider the following:
- Wear a merino wool top and bottom longs. Much warmer than synthetics
- Use a bag liner for extra warmth (Sea to Summit makes a nice one), They advertise it as adding 9 deg C which is nonsense, I'd say maybe 2 or 3 deg C additionally once you drop below zero, but it helps.
- Boil a liter of water and fill your Nalgene bottle at night. They can take boiling water, my wife usually does this in winter. Put it at the bottom of the bag and it wil keep you warm for hours. Just make sure you tighten the lid properly.
- Last one, eat protein and fatty foods for dinner. Protein speeds up your metabolism, so you will sleep warmer. Fat takes the longest to be broken down (it contains 9Cal/g whereas protein and carbs contains 4Cal/g) which means your body will be active for longer as it tries to process fat, resulting in a warmer night.
- Not sure if you will be sharing a tent with somebody, but generally speaking 1 person in a tent results in 2 Deg C warmer than outside, while 2 people in a tent results in roughly 5 Deg C warmer than outside. Also, sleep on the downwind side in the tent so your tent buddy blocks some of the wind blowing into the tent.
With all of the above you will easily be 10 Degrees warmer at night. hope these tips help
Enjoy your Traverse!
