@dunmor, for the snow I wouldn't venture out with approach shoes, go for proper hiking boots and wear with gaiters. If there is no snow, no probs with low cut boots, but as things are currently in the Berg its not a good idea. Go for something with Gortex and Vibram soles and you generally have an acceptable boot (Salomon have their own sole which is also very good).
Some manufactruers say you shouldnt do this, others say you can.
